Ridiculous Foul Call Would Have Suspended Caitlin Clark: Officials Found It to Be So Wrong, It Was Rescinded
A recent incident during a WNBA game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky involved Caitlin Clark, who was briefly caught in a refereeing controversy. Clark was called for a technical foul after a sequence where she was bumped out of bounds by Natasha Cloud, and clark’s reaction was very intense. The officiating crew initially upheld the technical foul but later rescinded the call, allowing Clark to play in the upcoming game against the New York liberty. The league clarified that clark’s contact with the referee was deemed unintentional, and the technical foul was overturned following an appeal. Clark expressed that her emotional playing style is part of her identity and plans to continue playing passionately.
Additionally, in the same game, DiJonai Carrington was ejected after a violent foul on Sophie Cunningham, leading to accusations of racial bias from Carrington, who claimed “white privilege” was involved. Cunningham responded by defending her actions, emphasizing they were intentional and criticizing the focus on race. The game featured heightened emotions, controversial calls, and discussions about officiating fairness and player conduct.
A referee who was briefly caught in the middle of the WNBA scrimmage between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky on Saturday tried to slap a technical foul on Caitlin Clark.
The call lasted about two hours before the league reversed the ruling.
WNBA rules say that when a player gets her eighth technical foul of the season, she also gets a one-game suspension. With Indiana set to play the New York Liberty Tuesday, the call would have benched Clark for that matchup.
The incident took place when a bump from Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud sent Clark reeling out of bounds. No foul was called, according to the Indianapolis Star.
Clark’s momentum carried her into a referee, who slapped a technical foul on Clark, whose volcanic reaction made it clear she thought the call was bogus.

After the game, crew chief Maj Forsberg said the official “deemed that Clark intentionally made contact; therefore, a technical foul was assessed,” according to ESPN.
Fever coach Stephanie White said Clark was ruled to have “intentionally [sought] out the official” and “threw the forearm,” according to CBS News.
White picked up her own technical for arguing the call.
“My tech was for saying that’s bulls***, even though I heard the F-bomb the whole f***ing game,” White said, according to ESPN.
“That’s a bad call,” White said, according to CBS.
“Incidental contact when you’re flying out of control. And I thought (the officials’) teammates should have come up and talked to her about that as well. I think that’s really bad. That (expletive) happens all the time in the game. Officials have to have some awareness in those moments and it didn’t happen,” she said.
After the game, Clark said she hoped the league would heed her team’s appeal to have the call rescinded.
“She said I ran into her,” Clark said of the referee, according to Fox News.
“I have already watched it on the tape. So, we’ll let the league decide. But, it wasn’t anything intentional or anything. So, I hope it gets rescinded. And nothing was said,” she said.
Clark said she had no plans to change the semi-controlled fury with which she plays.
“That intensity and that fire is what makes me, me,” Clark said, according to the Indianapolis Star.
“But also knowing my team needs me and finding a good balance of that. But I don’t think I’m going to be playing with that in the back of my head; I think that might hinder my play a little bit. I think just continue to be myself and then just try to refocus, to focus on my teammates and how I can help them,” she said.
Clark’s technical might have dominated the news, but was relegated to the status of “The Other Foul” due to DiJonai Carrington‘s ejection and subsequent claim of “White privilege” after she clotheslined Sophie Cunningham of the Fever, according to Fox News.
“Clearly, I think it was like, unnecessary. I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent-up stuff. So get your [expletive] off. That’s fine. I can take it.” Cunningham said after the game, according to Yahoo Sports.

Cunningham said the violent foul was intentional.
“I do think when people play the Fever, we’re nationally televised, there’s a lot of eyes on us, and people just want attention. And that’s her just trying to get attention,” she said.
