RFK Jr. reaffirms backing for full-term abortion access
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, expressed support for full-term abortions, emphasizing minimal government involvement. Amid expectations of abortion access as a key issue in the 2024 election post-Roe v. Wade’s 2022 reversal, Kennedy advocates for women’s autonomy in reproductive decisions. Despite recent clarifications, he maintains the stance that abortion rights should primarily rest with women.
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. voiced his support for full-term abortions, arguing, “we shouldn’t have the government involved.”
Kennedy’s statement comes as abortion access is expected to be a major topic among voters in the 2024 presidential election, the first presidential election since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. Kennedy explained that abortion ought to be a decision left up to women rather than the state, though he admitted that this option provides a “satisfactory outcome.”
“I believe we should leave it to the women,” Kennedy said on The Sage Steele Show. “We shouldn’t have government involved.”
Steele then asked for clarification if full-term abortions should be protected, to which Kennedy responded, “even if it’s full term.” He also argued that he does not believe anyone sets out to be pregnant for eight months before getting an abortion.
In August, Kennedy stated that he believes abortion should be left up to the mother “during the first three months of life,” adding that the state has a duty to protect the child “once a child is viable outside the womb.” Kennedy’s campaign then issued a statement claiming that he misunderstood the question asked to him by a reporter, and that his view on abortion is “always the woman’s right to choose.”

Kennedy’s vice presidential nominee, Nicole Shanahan, shared her view on abortion in April, stating that she does not like “the feeling of anyone having control over my body.” However, she added that she herself does not feel right “terminating a viable life living inside of me.”
Former President Donald Trump stated last month that he would leave the topic of abortion up to the states to decide, choosing not to campaign on abortion limits. President Joe Biden’s campaign, meanwhile, has focused heavily on abortion access ahead of the 2024 elections.
