‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ review.

Happiness is a Warm Gunn

Marvel Studios had an incredible run from 2008 to 2019, producing 23 superhero films that were critically acclaimed and beloved by audiences worldwide. However, the quality of their movies began to decline, with lackluster releases like Black Widow and The Eternals. But fear not, because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is here to save the day!

A Space Opera Like No Other

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a wildly imaginative, inventive, and surprisingly involving space opera. The movie is set far from Earth, and like its predecessors, it has a visual wit and richness that evokes superhero comic-book imagery at its most eye-popping. Writer-director James Gunn’s creative arsenal is on full display, with something to hold or distract your attention at every turn.

Gunn is a real director with a real vision, setting him apart from most of the Marvel product over the past several years. The delightful crew of misfits that make up the “guardians of the galaxy” undertake a risky journey to save the life of Rocket, the raccoon we vaguely knew from the first movie who had been turned into a superintelligent sociopath after being experimented on in a lab.

A Villain for the Ages

As we follow the guardians, we learn what happened to Rocket in a series of startlingly affecting flashbacks that feature a crazed utopian social engineer called The High Evolutionary. The Nigerian actor Chukwudi Iwuji gives a positively titanic performance as the High Evolutionary, probably the best and most formidable villain in all 32 MCU movies.

The Importance of Creative Vision

Gunn is a rarity in the Marvel world as both writer and director. Marvel often plays weird games when it comes to the directors it chooses, but Gunn has independent standing and credentials. Despite his bizarre history with Marvel and its parent company Disney, he has led the first two Guardian movies to unexpected box-office and creative heights. Disney and Marvel’s decision to sacrifice Gunn in the first place to the 2017 mob was a colossal blunder, and they still need him for their upcoming projects.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a must-see for any Marvel fan, and it’s a reminder of the importance of creative vision in the world of high-end popcorn filmmaking.
