6-story apartment building collapse: Rescue efforts ongoing overnight.

Breaking News: Eight Rescued After Iowa Apartment Building Collapse

Rescue teams worked tirelessly overnight to save eight people from the rubble of a collapsed six-story apartment building in Davenport, Iowa. The cause of the collapse is still unknown, and authorities are still trying to determine if anyone is missing.

While no deaths have been reported, authorities have not released information on how many people were injured or the nature of their injuries. The person rescued overnight is currently in the hospital.

Rescue teams, including K-9 units, worked through the night to search for survivors. The building’s stability is still a concern, and officials are finishing the rescue phase of their operation before moving to recovery.

Building Maintenance and Repair History

The building had a mixture of residential and commercial spaces, with 84 units in total. Nearly 20 permits were filed in 2022 for building repairs, mainly for plumbing or electrical issues, according to the county assessor’s office. Reports of bricks falling from the building earlier this week were part of that work, and the building’s owner had a permit for the project.

In June 2021, 98 people died when a high-rise condominium near Miami Beach, Florida, collapsed in the middle of the night. The Champlain Towers South in Surfside had a long history of maintenance problems, and shoddy construction techniques were used in the early 1980s. Other possible factors for the collapse include sea level rise caused by climate change and damage caused by saltwater intrusion.

Gratitude for First Responders

Davenport Mayor Mike Matson expressed his gratitude for the first responders who worked tirelessly to save lives. “When something like this happens here, and tragedy strikes, our responders immediately do their work and their job, and I can’t thank them enough,” he said.

Missing Persons

Authorities are still trying to determine if there are any missing people associated with the building. Some residents didn’t have cellphones or a second way of reaching them, making it difficult to confirm everyone’s safety.
