Republicans zeroing in on best challenger to Jon Tester in key Senate race

Republicans are narrowing in on the most formidable challenger to Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) in an important Senate race that could help decide which Party will control the upper chamber In 2024.

GOP leaders at the National Republican Senatorial Committee are said to be looking for veteran Tim Sheehy, who cites his military background as well as his status as an outsider as strengths to help him rise to the top. Steve Daines, Chairman of the NRSC, has been pressing Sheehy for a bid. The committee leader is looking for top candidates. According to Axios.

Sheehy could run for office if he so chooses. He has many advantages that would make him an formidable opponent to Tester. Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, has served over 200 missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was also awarded the Purple Heart medal for his work in Afghanistan in 2015.

Sheehy is an independent wealthy veteran who could finance his campaign on his own. It would be a benefit to him that he has never held office before. This would allow him to avoid being attacked on voting records and controversial statements.

A campaign announcement would not be expected until several months if he decides that he wants to run. Axios. But, it would put him in a challenging primary against Rep. Matt Rosendale (R MT), who is seen by many as another top contender within GOP circles.

The GOP is focusing on Montana as one of its top targets in 2024 as it tries to reelect a handful of Democratic senators from red states. It includes Sen. Joe Manchin (D–WV), Sen. Tester (D–OH), and Sen. Sherrod.
