GOP Prepared to Employ Nuclear Option Against Garland: ‘No Empty Threat’

Allegations Spark New Interest in Impeaching Attorney General Merrick Garland

The recent testimony of two whistleblowers has ignited a renewed focus on the potential impeachment of Attorney General Merrick Garland. The House Oversight Committee released the whistleblowers’ testimony last week, revealing that U.S. attorney David Weiss, who was investigating Hunter Biden, claimed during a meeting that he was not responsible for deciding whether to file charges against Hunter Biden. Instead, Weiss pointed the finger at Garland, who denies interfering in the investigation.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has emphasized the potential consequences if Garland is found to have lied. McCarthy stated, “If it comes true what the IRS whistleblower is saying, we’re going to start impeachment inquiries on the attorney general.” McCarthy’s stance on impeachment has shifted, as he previously showed little enthusiasm for impeachment articles against President Joe Biden.

Several Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee have expressed their readiness to pursue impeachment if given the green light. Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California emphasized that it is not an empty threat, stating, “Congress can’t just look away from the culture of corruption that’s there for all to see, and the possibility of impeachment has to be on the table.” He believes that Garland’s actions warrant impeachment, as he has allowed partisan politics to influence the Justice Department.

Republican Rep. Harriet Hageman of Wyoming echoed these sentiments, asserting that the allegations surrounding the Hunter and Joe Biden investigation highlight the existence of a two-tiered system of justice. She believes that under Garland’s leadership, the Department of Justice has become a political weapon used to punish the president’s opponents.

Other Republican representatives, including Andy Biggs of Arizona and Troy Nehls and Chip Roy of Texas, have indicated their support for impeachment. In May, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia introduced a resolution calling for Garland’s impeachment, accusing him of facilitating the weaponization and politicization of the United States justice system.

Despite Garland’s denial of any interference, whistleblower Gary Shapley has released a statement reaffirming his testimony. Shapley claims that during an October 7, 2022 meeting at the Delaware U.S. Attorney’s Office, Weiss stated that he did not have the authority to file charges in other districts and had requested special counsel status. The group Oversight asserts that Shapley’s statement can be easily corroborated, leaving it up to Weiss and the Justice Department to reconcile the evidence.
