GOP Probing If DOJ Protected Hunter Biden in Chinese Corruption Trial
Top House Republicans Question Attorney General Merrick Garland on DOJ’s Handling of Hunter Biden’s Corruption Trial
In a bold move, House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) and House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) have written a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, demanding answers regarding the Justice Department’s alleged protection of Hunter Biden during the corruption trial of one of his Chinese associates.
The letter, sent on Tuesday, highlights the case of Chi Ping ”Patrick” Ho, a Chinese businessman who was sentenced to three years in prison in 2019 for bribing officials in Uganda and Chad on behalf of CEFC China Energy. Jordan and Comer argue that despite Hunter Biden’s connections to Ho and CEFC, DOJ prosecutors deliberately excluded him from the investigation.
“Information obtained by the Committees indicate that prosecutors sought to keep the Biden name out of Mr. Ho’s trial. First, as the Oversight Committee previously noted, prosecutors in Mr. Ho’s case seemingly redacted Hunter Biden’s name from evidence used at trial,”
During Ho’s trial, Vuk Jeremic, the former president of the United Nations General Assembly, testified about his consultancy work for CEFC and his efforts to establish connections with influential businessmen and politicians.
“During the trial, a prosecutor requested that the judge redact from an email between Ho and Jeremic that DOJ intended to introduce into evidence the name of ‘an individual that Mr. Jeremic was willing to bring to a dinner with the chairman Mr. Ye,’”
The Republicans’ letter reveals that the judge agreed to exclude the name of the individual Jeremic wanted to bring to dinner with Ye, citing concerns about introducing a political dimension to the case.

Jordan and Comer argue that the redacted name in question is Hunter Biden, who had significant ties to both Ho and CEFC leading up to the trial.
“In the years immediately preceding Mr. Ho’s trial and during his trial, Hunter Biden was closely connected to both Mr. Ho and CEFC. Mr. Biden’s business relationship with CEFC is lengthy and well-documented, and resulted in Mr. Biden receiving millions of dollars without providing an identifiable product or service,”

The lawmakers are demanding the unredacted email exchange between Ho and Jeremic, as well as the contents of Ho’s seized iPad, from the DOJ.
This letter is part of House Republicans’ ongoing investigation into the Biden family’s international business dealings and their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. As the corruption probe continues, President Biden’s denial of discussing business matters with Hunter is facing increasing scrutiny.

Furthermore, it also raises a host of questions regarding potential efforts to protect Hunter Biden and the Biden family name.”
The letter also points out that while Hunter Biden was omitted from the court record, his actions were still relevant to the case. They highlight the fact that CEFC, the company involved in the bribery scheme, planned to hire Hunter Biden, and that Ho had met extensively with Hunter Biden. Jordan and Comer state:
“The connections between Mr. Ho and Mr. Biden are certainly significant and relevant to the matter at hand, as it appears that Mr. Biden had a close relationship with Mr. Ho and that CEFC intended to engage Mr. Biden as well.”
The decision to exclude Hunter Biden from the trial raises concerns about the Department of Justice’s impartiality and calls into question whether the Biden name was given special treatment. Jordan and Comer also point to other instances where Hunter Biden’s potential involvement in criminal activities has been downplayed or ignored. They write:
“This is not the first instance in which information about Hunter Biden’s potentially criminal activity has been ignored or covered up by the media or the Department of Justice. The fact that the Biden family name appears to be a shield from thorough investigation is extremely troubling.”
The letter concludes with a demand for answers from Attorney General Garland. Jordan and Comer request a briefing to discuss the DOJ’s handling of the Hunter Biden corruption trial and the decision to exclude him from the court record. They write:
“We ask that you provide a briefing to the Committees regarding the Justice Department’s handling of the case against Mr. Ho and its apparent decision to exclude evidence related to Hunter Biden’s involvement. We request this briefing by no later than November 14, 2021.”
The House Republicans’ letter adds to the growing scrutiny surrounding Hunter Biden’s alleged corruption and the DOJ’s handling of his cases. As the investigation into Hunter Biden’s business dealings continues, the questions raised by Jordan and Comer are likely to be a focal point of the probe. It remains to be seen how the Department of Justice will respond to their demand for answers.
