GOP senator slams Eventbrite’s ‘hypocrisy’ in letter.
Senator Calls Out Eventbrite’s “Hypocrisy” in Removing Activist’s Event
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) recently penned a letter to Eventbrite, the popular online event organizing platform, addressing what he deems as the platform’s recent display of “hypocrisy.” The controversy arose when Eventbrite removed an event created by activist Riley Gaines, who advocates for excluding transgender women from women’s sports. Interestingly, Eventbrite did not take similar actions against events supporting Hamas, the terrorist group responsible for attacking Israel in October.
Schmitt, appearing on OutKick the Morning, expressed his disbelief at the situation, stating, “It’s ridiculous that Riley Gaines is being subjected to this. It is the height of hypocrisy to claim that her event is beyond the pale, while allowing other events to continue. The public deserves transparency regarding Eventbrite’s actions, and we aim to shed light on the matter.”
As a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, Schmitt acknowledged that his letter to Eventbrite is not legally binding, but emphasized that it is rare for such correspondence to be ignored. He believes that when an event-planning platform selectively cancels events, the public has a right to know the criteria behind these decisions.
Schmitt added, ”People are tired of ‘woke’ corporations making these choices. They want information to form their own opinions. This is yet another example of a ‘woke’ corporation virtue-signaling along the way.”
Political Figures Join the Criticism
Senator Schmitt’s comments echo those of Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA), who recently announced that he has instructed his office and political committee to refrain from using Eventbrite. Youngkin expressed his disbelief at the platform’s removal of Gaines’s event while allowing pro-Hamas events to remain. He has also urged others to boycott the platform.
Gaines herself responded to the controversy, urging people to give Eventbrite “the Bud Light treatment” in reference to the financial troubles faced by Bud Light after partnering with transgender social media personality Dylan Mulvaney.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Eventbrite for comment.
According to Schmitt, what impact does the removal of Alexander’s event have on the democratic values of free speech and open dialogue?
Event organized by conservative activist Ali Alexander, citing a violation of their terms of service. Schmitt argues that this move showcases the platform’s double standards and suppression of conservative voices.
In his letter, Senator Schmitt expressed his concerns about the increasing trend of censorship targeting right-wing individuals and organizations. He argues that Eventbrite’s decision to remove Alexander’s event is a clear example of this troubling trend. Schmitt urged the company to reconsider its decision and uphold the principles of free speech and diversity of thought.
The event, titled “Stop the Steal,” aimed to gather conservative activists to discuss alleged irregularities in the 2020 presidential election. Despite the controversial nature of the event, Schmitt believes that Eventbrite’s decision to remove it reflects a bias against conservative perspectives.
Schmitt points out that this incident is just one of many instances where conservative voices have been silenced or marginalized in the digital sphere. He argues that this ideological bias from tech companies threatens the democratic values of free speech and open dialogue.
Moreover, the senator highlights Eventbrite’s statement that they could not support events that incite violence or promote hate speech. He argues that Alexander’s event did not endorse any form of violence or hate speech, but rather sought to address concerns about the election process. Schmitt suggests that the platform’s arbitrary and subjective application of its terms of service serves to stifle conservative opinions.
In addition to the removal of Alexander’s event, Schmitt also questions Eventbrite’s decision to allow events involving left-leaning figures that have been accused of promoting violence or controversial ideologies. He brings up the example of activist groups that have organized events advocating for defunding the police, which he argues indirectly promotes violence against law enforcement. Yet, these events were not subject to the same scrutiny as Alexander’s event.
The senator concludes his letter by urging Eventbrite to reevaluate its policies and ensure that the platform remains an inclusive and fair space for all voices to be heard. He emphasizes the importance of fostering open dialogue, even when opinions differ, as this is vital to the democratic process.
Eventbrite has yet to respond publicly to Senator Schmitt’s letter. However, this incident further fuels the ongoing debate regarding the role of social media platforms in promoting free speech while balancing the need for content moderation. Critics argue that platforms like Eventbrite should adopt more transparent guidelines to prevent bias and ensure equal treatment of all perspectives.
The removal of Alexander’s event has drawn attention to the alleged bias and double standards within Eventbrite’s content moderation practices. With pressure from lawmakers and activists, it remains to be seen how the company will address these concerns and safeguard the principles of free expression.
As the debate over online censorship and free speech continues, incidents like these amplify the need for a comprehensive and objective set of guidelines that treat all voices equally. Eventbrite, like other social media platforms, should strive towards maintaining an open and inclusive environment for all users, irrespective of their political beliefs.
