Trump criticizes his Republican rivals as ‘weak,’ ‘maniac,’ and ‘gonzo’ during debate with Tucker Carlson.
Former President Donald Trump Takes Center Stage in Pre-Debate Interview
Former President Donald Trump recently made headlines with a 46-minute interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. In this engaging conversation, Trump didn’t hold back as he criticized his rival presidential candidates, President Joe Biden, and addressed the four criminal cases he currently faces.
In a surprising move that snubbed the Republican National Committee and Fox News, Trump opted out of the first primary debate of the 2024 cycle. Instead, he released a prerecorded interview with Carlson on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, just five minutes before the debate was set to begin.
Up for Debate: Where Trump, DeSantis, and the Rest of the Republican 2024 Field Stand on Key Issues
Explaining his decision to skip the debate, Trump told Carlson, “I just felt it would be more appropriate not to do it. I don’t think it’s right to do it.” He expressed his reluctance to face a barrage of questions from multiple candidates, stating that while he enjoys answering them, it simply didn’t make sense for him to participate.
Meanwhile, the eight candidates who did take the stage in Milwaukee aimed to make their case to the audience, hoping to convince them that they should be the GOP’s next standard-bearer. Interestingly, six out of the eight candidates admitted that they would support Trump if he were convicted and became the Republican nominee.
Prior to the debate, Trump’s allies and campaign had already been targeting his top rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), by sending out a “Ron DeSanctimonious Debate Night Bingo” card to reporters. During his interview with Carlson, Trump didn’t hold back, declaring the DeSantis campaign as “gonzo” and claiming that Fox News was finished with him.
Trump didn’t stop there. He also took shots at former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, calling him a “savage maniac,” and criticized former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, labeling him as “weak and pathetic.” Additionally, Trump expressed his disappointment in his former running mate-turned-rival, Mike Pence, stating that he hadn’t spoken to him in a long time and was very disappointed in him.
Despite Trump’s absence from the debate, his senior advisor Chris LaCivita boldly declared him the winner. “President Trump has already won this evening’s debate because everything is going to be about him,” LaCivita confidently stated. He emphasized that only Trump possesses the policy ideas, fortitude, and polling numbers to go head-to-head with President Joe Biden in the general election.
As the undisputed front-runner in the GOP primary race, Trump leads all other rivals in both national and state polls. However, he acknowledged that his opponents would view their attacks as “fraud,” especially considering his two impeachments and increasing legal troubles.
When asked about potential violence against himself or the possibility of a civil war, Trump responded with stark comments, expressing concern over the level of passion and hatred he has witnessed. He also didn’t shy away from using an expletive to dismiss his indictments, calling them “bulls***.”
Interestingly, Trump’s flippant remark came just one day before he was expected to surrender at the Fulton County, Georgia, jail. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had indicted him and 18 others for violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act in connection to the 2020 presidential election.
President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign wasted no time in responding to the Trump interview, criticizing it as a “softball” event used to promote “wild, debunked conspiracy theories” and “out-of-touch positions.” Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz stated, “In his softball ‘interview’ posting tonight, Donald Trump will again make clear that he’s running on the same extreme and deeply unpopular MAGA agenda the American people have rejected time and time again.”
