DeSantis asserts sole Republican candidacy for presidency.
Gov. Ron DeSantis: The Only Republican Candidate Running to Win
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) boldly declared on Wednesday that he is the sole Republican candidate with his sights set on the presidency. His statement comes just hours before the highly anticipated Republican Party’s first presidential primary debate, scheduled to air on Fox News at 9 p.m. tonight.
The Lineup of Competitors
DeSantis will face formidable opponents in the debate, including Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Vice President Mike Pence, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC).
Where Do They Stand?
One of the key questions up for debate is where each candidate stands on crucial issues. It’s a chance for the American people to gauge their positions and make informed decisions.
“I’m not running to be vice president,” DeSantis confidently stated during his appearance on Fox News. “I’m not running to be in the Cabinet. And I’m not running to be a contributor on cable news. We’re running to win, and we’re going to show people that we’ll get the job done.”
DeSantis’s statement not only serves as a subtle dig at his primary opponents but also takes aim at a PAC for former President Donald Trump. The PAC recently launched a website promoting the event as the “2024 Vice Presidential Debate,” implying that the candidates are vying to be Trump’s running mate.
A video clip of DeSantis’s interview was shared on social media by a pro-DeSantis PAC called Never Back Down. Interestingly, the PAC’s Twitter account was briefly suspended on Wednesday, but it has since been restored. According to a PAC staffer, Twitter claimed it was a mistake by their automated systems, which mistakenly flagged it as “spam.”
Meanwhile, Trump has decided not to participate in the debate. Citing a recent poll that shows him leading the 2024 Republican primary race, he will instead engage in an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The interview will be posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, during the same time as the Republican debate.
Despite facing legal challenges, including four cases investigating various allegations, Trump’s supporters remain steadfast in their desire to vote for him in 2024. According to a poll from Morning Consult, 64% of Republicans would be “very” or “somewhat” willing to cast their vote for Trump in the primary, even if he is convicted. Additionally, 60% would still vote for Trump if he were imprisoned, and this sentiment remains virtually unchanged for the general election.
