Republican debate: 2024 hopefuls vow end to fentanyl crisis, even by lethal force at border
Republican Presidential Candidates Offer Solutions to Fentanyl Epidemic
Republican presidential candidates have presented a range of strategies to combat the fentanyl epidemic that is devastating the United States. One particularly striking proposal involves taking lethal action against drug smugglers caught at the border.
Governor Ron DeSantis Takes a Tough Stance
Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has taken the strongest position on border security, pledging to make Mexico pay for the completion of a border wall through unconventional means. He has also advocated for the use of deadly force against anyone attempting to bring fentanyl into the country.
“I’m going to put a stop to this invasion once and for all. I will deport those who entered the country illegally, and I will fulfill Donald Trump’s promise of building a border wall with Mexico footing the bill,” declared DeSantis. “Instead of relying on Mexico’s cooperation, we will impose fees on remittances sent by foreign workers to their home countries. This will generate billions of dollars that we can use to construct the wall.”
DeSantis has also proposed designating Mexican drug cartels as ”foreign terrorist organizations” and authorizing the use of lethal force. Additionally, he plans to station U.S. ships off the Mexican coast to intercept any fentanyl ingredients coming from China.
“Let me make this clear: if a drug cartel member tries to smuggle fentanyl across the border while I’m president, that will be the last mistake they ever make. We will shoot them without hesitation,” asserted DeSantis.
Haley Calls for Action Against China
Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has called for a complete halt to “normal trade relations” with China until they cease providing fentanyl pill presses and precursor ingredients to Mexico. These materials are used by cartels to produce the final product that is then transported across the southern border.
Haley also proposes deploying the U.S. military to dismantle the cartels and increasing the number of federal immigration and border law enforcement personnel by 25,000. She emphasizes the importance of addressing the demand side of the crisis by focusing on mental health and addiction centers.
“Our first priority should be investing in mental health and addiction centers. Our country is in desperate need of these facilities because we often neglect mental health, leading individuals to fall into addiction,” stated Haley. “We owe it to them to treat addiction as seriously as we do cancer.”
Christie and Scott Offer Financial Solutions
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy also weighed in on the fentanyl crisis. Christie believes that tackling the root causes of addiction is crucial in addressing the demand for drugs. He views addiction as a disease that requires comprehensive treatment.
On the other hand, Rick Scott proposes targeting the finances of Mexican cartels and Chinese money launderers to prevent profits from fentanyl sales from reaching Mexico. This financial approach aims to cripple the cartels and disrupt their drug trade.
Ramaswamy’s Unique Perspective
Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy offers a distinctive perspective on the fentanyl crisis. He argues that calling it an “overdose” is inaccurate because some drug users are unaware that the pills they consume may be laced with fentanyl. Ramaswamy suggests referring to it as a “poisoning” and even compares the crisis to bioterrorism.
In the fiscal year 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized over 6 billion potentially lethal doses of fentanyl at the border, with approximately 90% of seizures occurring at ports of entry.

How can increasing cooperation with Mexican authorities help in tackling the influx of fentanyl into the United States?
L product that is flooding the United States. Haley argues that putting pressure on China is crucial in addressing the fentanyl epidemic and preventing further devastation.
“As a nation, we cannot continue to turn a blind eye to China’s role in the production and distribution of fentanyl,” stated Haley. “By cutting off trade relations with China until they take tangible steps to address this issue, we can send a strong message that their actions will no longer be tolerated.”
Haley also emphasized the need for increased cooperation with Mexican authorities to target and dismantle the cartels that are responsible for the influx of fentanyl into the United States. She proposed establishing joint task forces that would work together to disrupt the cartels’ operations and bring those involved to justice.
“We cannot solely rely on border security measures to solve this problem,” Haley argued. “We need to tackle the issue at its root, which involves dismantling the criminal networks that are profiting from the fentanyl trade.”
Other Proposed Solutions
In addition to the strategies put forward by DeSantis and Haley, there have been other proposed solutions from Republican presidential candidates. These include:
1. Increasing funding for addiction treatment and rehabilitation centers to provide support for those struggling with fentanyl addiction.
2. Strengthening penalties for drug traffickers and implementing stricter surveillance and enforcement measures at the border.
3. Enhancing collaboration between federal and state authorities to track and intercept fentanyl shipments.
4. Investing in research and development to develop more effective fentanyl detection methods.
5. Educating the public about the dangers of fentanyl and promoting responsible prescription practices among healthcare professionals.
While all the Republican candidates agree on the severity of the fentanyl epidemic and the urgent need for action, there are differences in their proposed solutions. Nonetheless, it is promising to see the issue receive attention and a commitment from the Republican party to tackle this crisis head-on.
It is important to note that these strategies outlined by the Republican presidential candidates are subject to the democratic process and may require further deliberation and consensus-building. The implementation of any policy must be done with careful consideration of its potential impact and the involvement of various stakeholders, including experts, law enforcement agencies, and affected communities.
The fentanyl epidemic is a critical issue that demands a comprehensive and multipronged approach, involving not only the Republican presidential candidates but also bipartisan efforts and cooperation at all levels of government. By working together and engaging in constructive dialogue, we can strive towards effectively combating the fentanyl epidemic and protecting the welfare of the American people.
