Reporter challenges Rep. Dan Goldman on Archer testimony assertion.
A House Democrat Mischaracterizes Testimony, Gets Called Out by Reporter
A House Democrat recently faced scrutiny from a reporter after mischaracterizing closed-door testimony by Devon Archer, a former business associate of Hunter Biden. The transcript of the testimony has now been released, revealing the inaccuracies in the Democrat’s claims.
Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) had told journalists that Archer had stated that Hunter Biden sought to create the “illusion of access” to his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, in order to receive undeserved credit. This led to numerous news outlets publishing headlines that highlighted this phrase.
CBS News senior investigative correspondent Catherine Herridge, however, pointed out that the phrase “illusion of access” was actually part of Goldman’s question and not something that Archer testified to.
CBS calls out Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman’s lies on the Devon Archer testimony:
“In fact, when you look at the transcript, what you see is that phrase ‘illusion of access’ is in Dan Goldman’s question — it’s actually NOT what Devon Archer testified to.” pic.twitter.com/xBajOaKvnF

Indeed, as the transcript clearly shows, Goldman repeatedly questioned Archer about the “illusion of access” but Archer did not use that phrase himself. He described it as being “almost fair.” Archer did acknowledge that there were contacts between Hunter Biden and his father, although he emphasized that no substantial discussions took place. According to Archer, Hunter Biden would occasionally put his father on speakerphone during meetings with business associates, which Archer considered to be a significant signal, even if the conversations were only about casual topics like the weather. Archer also mentioned that Joe Biden attended some dinners with his son’s foreign business associates.
Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) responded to Archer’s testimony by stating, “What we learned from Devon Archer: Then VP Biden sat in on his son’s business dinners and was often on speakerphone with his son during business meetings. This isn’t the illusion of access — it is access.”

Goldman, who previously served as lead counsel in the first Trump impeachment, has become a prominent defender of President Biden and a vocal critic of GOP-led inquiries. Some Republicans, such as Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), have even compared Goldman to Adam Schiff, accusing him of spinning the facts to protect the Biden family.
“He is the leading defense attorney in Congress for the Biden family,” Donalds remarked in an interview. “He’s going to spin and do whatever he needs to do.”
