Report: Russia Is Giving China ‘Incredibly Important’ Military Technology to Use Against US

The military partnership between Russia and China is a potential threat to the United States, according to a retired Navy admiral.

Retired Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery said Russia is helping China access technology to muffle submarine sounds, making them harder to detect

“Russia is giving incredibly important technology to China. They’re allegedly giving them submarine quieting technology,” Montgomery said, according to Fox News.

Montgomery noted that the U.S. has long enjoyed an advantage in submarine warfare, but could be losing that.

“Any weakening of our asymmetric advantage in undersea warfare is a big deal,” he said, noting that if a war breaks out over Taiwan, seeking and neutralizing Chinese submarines could be a major factor in protecting the island nation China claims as its own.

“This transactional relationship is putting the United States and its most important allies and partners at risk,” he said.

China said it is doing nothing wrong.

“Military cooperation between China and Russia consistently adheres to the principles of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and non-targeting of third parties, playing a significant role in safeguarding the sovereignty and security of both nations and maintaining international and regional peace and stability,” its embassy said in a statement.

“We hope that relevant parties will view China-Russia military cooperation objectively and rationally, and stop groundless speculation,” the statement said.

Montgomery said China’s support extends beyond supplies, adding that China supplies parts Russia needs for its weapons in its war with Ukraine, while Russia ships technology to China.

China and Russia last month held joint military drills that included submarines and drones, along with more traditional weapons, according to the Economist.

These were the first military exercises in which the two nations used drones as part of the scenarios.

In an interview with Radio Free Europe, Montgomery said the U.S. must change its ways to keep pace.

“For decades, the U.S. could afford a very deliberate process because no country could seriously challenge us. We spent 15 years designing and building a ship. We spent 10 years designing and fielding a new aircraft. Those timelines have to shrink dramatically,” he said.

“When we’re talking about drones, counterdrone systems, or munitions, procurement should be measured in months, not years. Even for major platforms like ships and aircraft, development should be measured in years, not decades,” he said.

“Ultimately, success will depend on procurement reform and on building the speed and agility necessary to compete with our adversaries,” he said.
