The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act would have reimbursed landlords like Tlaib with taxpayer money if her tenant’s rent was cancelled.

Michigan Congresswoman and Detroit landlord Rashida Tlaib, who co-sponsored the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act, profited upwards of $100,000 from rental home tenants during the Covid pandemic.

Fox News reports that Tlaib’s latest annual financial disclosure report showed she made between $15,001 and $50,000 in rental income from her property in 2021, and she profited the same amount in 2020.

Tlaib is a member of the so-called progressive “Squad” along with members such as AOC and Ilhan Omar, all of whom backed the defunct Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act, which looked to cancel rent and mortgage payments throughout the duration of the coronavirus pandemic.

The bill would have canceled rent and mortgage payments nationwide through 2022 and also set aside a relief fund to cover landlord and mortgage holder lost payments due to that cancellation. Landlords, such as Tlaib, would not receive traditional rent from tenants but rather government reimbursement payments from taxpayers.

The bill also sought to to increase affordable public housing by “creating an optional buyout fund to fully finance the purchase of private rental properties by non-profits, public housing authorities, cooperatives, community land trusts, and states or local governments.”

On the bill’s second attempt, Tlaib tweeted, “HAPPENING NOW: I’m joining Rep. @Ilhan Omar and fellow colleagues for a press conference on the Rent & Mortgage Cancellation Act. Our residents need help during this ongoing pandemic & this legislation seeks to provide that help to ensure our neighbors have the housing they need.”

According to Fox News, Squad member Ayanna Pressley, who also co-sponsored the rent cancellation bill, also maintains a rental revenue stream with her husband and profited somewhere between $5,000 and $15,000 in 2020.
