Rep. Tim Burchett doubles down on McCarthy assault claim: ‘Spiraling out of control’
Rep. Tim Burchett Accuses Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Assault, Claims He’s “Spinning Out of Control”
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) stood firm on his assertion that he was physically attacked by Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), describing the former House speaker as someone who is “spiraling out of control.”
Burchett alleged that McCarthy forcefully elbowed him in the kidney as they crossed paths on Tuesday. Later that evening, Burchett appeared on CNN, reiterating his claim and characterizing McCarthy as someone who has lost control.

“It’s disheartening to see him end his career in this manner – spiraling out of control,” expressed Burchett.
“What disappoints me even more is that we should be focusing on urgent matters like the budget crisis, but individuals like McCarthy are only concerned about themselves and their childish behavior,” he added.
The Tennessee Republican continued to assert that McCarthy’s actions indicate a deeper issue within him.
“I forgive him, and I’ve offered numerous prayers for him today, ma’am,” Burchett shared. “There’s clearly something troubling him deep inside, and he will continue engaging in these types of activities, which will only bring embarrassment to himself, his family, his district, and frankly, the Republican caucus. It shouldn’t affect anyone else, but unfortunately, that seems to be the case. I hope he can find peace in his life because leaving on a bitter note like this is not the way to go. He was so close to being in the White House, and this is how he’s choosing to exit. It’s truly a sad reflection on him.”
Burchett clarified that he had no intention of filing an ethics complaint and did not experience significant pain from the incident.
According to reporter Claudia Grisales and Burchett’s account, McCarthy elbowed the Tennessee Republican in the back as they passed each other. Burchett confronted McCarthy, questioning why he had elbowed him before chasing after him. McCarthy denied the shove, to which Burchett responded, “You have no courage. You did it. … The reporter witnessed it. What kind of cowardly move is that?”
McCarthy vehemently denied the accusation, asserting that Burchett would have been writhing in pain if he had truly elbowed him in the kidneys.
Both Republicans have a well-known history of animosity towards each other, particularly since Burchett was one of the eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy as speaker.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), the leader of the movement to oust McCarthy, filed an ethics complaint against the former House speaker regarding the alleged assault.

How does this incident reflect the current state of affairs in American politics and the level of civility among elected officials?
Their own personal agendas,” Burchett continued.
In response to Burchett’s allegations, McCarthy’s office released a statement denying any wrongdoing on the part of the congressman. The statement emphasized that McCarthy had no intention of physically harming Burchett and portrayed the incident as a mere accidental collision.
The altercation between the two congressmen took place during a hectic day on Capitol Hill, with tensions running high over various political issues. Burchett believes that McCarthy’s behavior represents a larger problem within the Republican Party, stating, “This incident is indicative of the toxic and divisive environment that exists within our own party.”
While it is not uncommon for political disagreements to arise within Congress, physical altercations are incredibly rare. The incident has sparked debate about the level of civility and decorum that should be expected among elected officials.
As news of the alleged assault spread, other members of Congress weighed in on the situation. Some expressed support for Burchett, calling for a thorough investigation into McCarthy’s actions, while others defended McCarthy, questioning the validity of Burchett’s claims.
The accusations against McCarthy come at a critical time for the Republican Party, as they face numerous challenges within their ranks and as they prepare for the upcoming elections. The incident has only fueled speculation about divisions and infighting within the party.
Although both Burchett and McCarthy are members of the same political party, it is becoming increasingly clear that their differences on certain issues have led to a strained relationship. The incident serves as a reminder that even within the same political party, individuals can have vastly different beliefs and approaches.
It remains to be seen how this incident will impact the future relationship between Burchett and McCarthy, as well as any potential repercussions for McCarthy’s political career. Nevertheless, it serves as a testament to the current state of affairs in American politics, where tensions and divisions often prevail over bipartisan collaboration.
As the nation navigates through challenging times, it is crucial for elected officials to remain focused on the pressing issues at hand. Incidents like these distract from the important matters that require urgent attention and instead contribute to a culture of polarization and division.
Ultimately, it is up to the electorate to hold their representatives accountable and demand better from their elected officials. Only through a collective effort to prioritize the needs of the people and find common ground can the country move forward and address the pressing challenges it faces.
