Rep. McCarthy: Rep. Gaetz is innocent until proven guilty

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) will remain on the House Judiciary Committee and is “innocent until proven guilty.”

During a press briefing on Thursday, the Republican said he personally met with the Florida lawmaker who professed his innocence. Gaetz has been accused of misusing campaign funds to finance travel for women.

“Matt Gaetz says he is innocent, there’s an investigation going on and I’ll let the investigation take care of itself before I take any action,” McCarthy asserted.

Republican Party rules require lawmakers to resign committee assignments when charged with felonies that carry at least a two-year sentence and McCarthy pointed out Gaetz has yet to be charged with any crime.

“Matt Gaetz is is the same as any American, he’s innocent until proven guilty,” continued the House minority leader. “There’s no charges against him yet; if a charge comes forward, it would be dealt with at that time.”

Meanwhile, Gaetz has said the public allegations against him are blatantly false and are merely a narrative created by the far-left.
