Rep. David Trone Launches Senate Bid to Tackle Critical Issues

On May 4, Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) announced his bid for the Senate, vying to succeed retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.). In a powerful video, Trone, 67, highlighted several critical issues that demand immediate attention.

Drug Overdoses: A National Crisis

Trone drew attention to the alarming number of drug overdose deaths in America, with 10 people losing their lives every hour. He emphasized that 100,000 preventable deaths occurred in 2021, and another 100,000 are expected in 2022 if no action is taken.

Mental Illness and Suicide

Trone also spoke about the devastating impact of mental illness, with five people taking their lives every hour. He revealed that 50,000 people lost their lives to suicide last year alone.

The Criminal Justice System: A Broken System

Trone highlighted the systemic racism in the criminal justice system, with over 100 black men arrested every hour, five times the rate of white men. He questioned if anyone finds this acceptable and emphasized that it is not acceptable to him.

Trone’s personal story is one of resilience and determination. He grew up on a farm that was seized due to his family’s inability to pay its debt. He founded Total Wine & More, a successful wine business that has made him a millionaire. He has given previously incarcerated people a second chance by providing them with free college and partner benefits.

Trone has been in Congress since 2019 and believes that there is more work to be done. He joins a Democratic field that includes Will Jawando, at-large Montgomery County council member, and socialist Jerome Segal. Other potential candidates include Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.); former

Join Trone in his mission to tackle these critical issues and make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans.
