Rep. Claudia Tenney’s attempt to lower White House press secretary salary to $1 fails
Resolution to Lower White House Press Secretary’s Salary Fails
Representative Claudia Tenney’s (R-NY) attempt to decrease the salary of White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was met with opposition. The House voted 257-165-1 against Tenney’s resolution on Thursday, with 54 Republicans breaking ranks to vote against it.
Tenney Accuses Jean-Pierre of Dishonesty and Condescension
“During Ms. Jean-Pierre’s tenure as press secretary, she has repeatedly lied to the American people and acted in a condescending manner towards reporters and also violated the Hatch Act,” Tenney stated passionately on the House floor before the vote.
The Hatch Act prohibits executive branch employees from promoting or discouraging political activity. Tenney claims that Jean-Pierre has made disparaging remarks about “MAGA Republicans.”
Tenney summarized her speech in a tweet on X:
“White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre has said: Illegal Immigration is down 90% under the Biden Admin. Nobody is ‘just walking in’ across the Southern Border. The 2016 Election was stolen,” Tenney wrote. “It is time her salary is reduced to $1 for her LIES to the American people.”
Currently, Jean-Pierre’s salary is $180,000, slightly higher than the average House member’s salary of $174,000.
This development follows the successful passage of a bill in the House to decrease the salary of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas due to concerns about his performance in handling the influx of immigrants at the southern border. Tenney was one of the Republicans who proposed this measure. However, its chances of passing the Senate, which is controlled by a Democratic majority, are slim.
In Mayorkas’s case, the Holman rule was utilized, granting Congress the power to reduce the salaries of government officials.

The focus on fiscal responsibility has prompted us to evaluate the necessity and appropriateness of salaries for government officials. One specific position that has come under scrutiny is that of the White House Press Secretary, whose salary has been deemed excessive in light of economic challenges and fiscal constraints. The White House Press Secretary is responsible for conveying the administration’s policies, ideas, and initiatives to the public through the media. They serve as the face of the administration, engaging with journalists and addressing their inquiries. This position requires strong communication skills, political acumen, and the ability to remain composed under intense pressure. While it is crucial to ensure competent individuals hold this role, the question arises as to whether the current salary level adequately reflects the demands and responsibilities associated with the position.
2. The need for fiscal responsibility:
With increasing national debt and numerous societal challenges requiring substantial funding, it is essential to reevaluate government spending. This includes scrutinizing the salaries of public officials to ensure they are in line with the fiscal constraints faced by the nation. Aligning the Press Secretary’s salary with those of similarly influential positions will ensure fairness and equity within the government structure.
4. Encouraging public service and dedication:
Reducing the salary of the White House Press Secretary may also help to attract individuals driven more by a desire to serve the public than by financial gain.
