The referee, Ivan Barton, took a stand against the offensive chanting and halted the game in the final minute of regulation time. However, the chant persisted even after the game resumed, leading Barton to make the difficult decision to end the game early during stoppage time.

Concacaf initially stated that the game ended at the “referee’s discretion,” but later released a statement condemning the discriminatory behavior of some fans. The organization acknowledged that the chants triggered the activation of the anti-discrimination protocol and resulted in the ejection of several fans from the stadium.

The Mexican Football Federation has faced consequences for this behavior in the past, with a fine of $108,000 imposed during the 2022 World Cup. Concacaf is currently gathering more information from security and match officials to address the situation further.

The intensity of the game spilled over onto the field, resulting in four red cards being issued. Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest from the U.S. team, as well as César Montes and Gerardo Arteaga from the Mexican team, were all ejected from the match.
