Record sexual harassment and assault found at military academies: ‘Extremely disappointing and upsetting’

The new Department of Defense Survey on assault and sexual harassment at military academies revealed unimaginable levels, as one official stated. “extremely disappointing and upsetting.”

According to the Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office’s annual report, 21.4% of women and 4.4% of cadets and men cadets had inappropriate sexual contact in the 2021-2022 academic school year. These are both new highs, which neither sex has reached since 2006, when the survey was started.

“So, unfortunately, this year’s report shows a significant increase in sexual assault prevalence at the military service academies. Our numbers indicate that this is the highest sexual assault estimated prevalence rate for both women and men at the military service academies since the department started measuring this in 2006,” Beth Foster, the Defense Force Resiliency Office’s executive director, spoke during a briefing. “These numbers are extremely disappointing and upsetting. I mean, there’s really no other way to see it.”

According to the office, 1,136 military students were victims of unwanted sexual contact. 155 people reported this incident in the 2022 school year. This is an increase from the 131 who had reported it the year before. The coronavirus pandemic prevented the 2020 survey from being conducted. However, in 2018, the anonymous survey showed that around 737 students were the victims of unwanted sexual contact. This is an increase from 507 in previous surveys.
