Rep. Jamie Raskin Slams GOP Over Antisemitism Response
During a recent interview on MSNBC, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) passionately criticized the Republican Party’s handling of the national issue of antisemitism on college campuses. Raskin specifically called out Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and former President Donald Trump for their actions and associations.
“Somebody like Elise Stefanik has no problem going after Ivy League presidents, what about Donald Trump, who dines with Nicholas Fuentes, who is an unreconstructed holocaust revisionist neonazi who says that Jews don’t belong in Western civilization,” Raskin expressed.
Raskin further highlighted the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, where Trump infamously stated that there were “some very fine people on both sides.” The rally included chants of “Jews will not replace us!” as reported by the Anti-Defamation League.
“If we’re going to have a conversation about antisemitism, let’s talk about real antisemitism in the Republican party,” Raskin emphasized.
The discussion then shifted to the recent testimony of college heads before Congress. One of the witnesses, President of the University of Pennsylvania Liz Magill, faced backlash and eventually resigned due to her appearance.
During her testimony, Magill was questioned about whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated the university’s code of conduct. CBS News reported that she responded by stating, “If it is directed and severe and pervasive, it is harassment.” When pressed further by Stefanik, Magill described the decision as “context-dependent.”
Magill’s refusal to provide a straightforward “yes” or “no” answer to the question received criticism.
