Raskin supports Slotkin’s Senate campaign, bolstering her in Dem primary.
Rep. Jamie Raskin Endorses Rep. Elissa Slotkin’s Senate Bid
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has thrown his support behind Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) in her campaign for Senate, providing a significant boost as she faces a primary challenge to succeed retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).
Raskin, a prominent House Democrat who played a key role as an impeachment manager during former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment proceeding, is scheduled to visit Michigan on Wednesday to campaign with Slotkin in Ann Arbor.
A Must-Win Race for Democrats
“This Senate race is a must-win for Democrats nationally, and Elissa is the candidate who will keep this seat blue and make the Senate a powerful vehicle for the common good,” Raskin stated.
Slotkin, a three-term congresswoman who successfully flipped a GOP-held seat in 2018, is currently the front-runner in the primary race. According to a recent Emerson College poll, a plurality of Democratic primary voters plan to support Slotkin for the Democratic nomination for Senate, with Hill Harper, an author and actor running to the left of the centrist Democrat, receiving 8% of the support. Meanwhile, 25% of voters remain undecided, and 22% express support for other candidates.
Slotkin has proven herself to be a formidable fundraiser, having raised $5.8 million and maintaining $3.6 million in the bank at the end of the last fundraising quarter. The Michigan race is ranked as leaning Democratic by Sabato’s Crystal Ball.
Republican Contenders
On the Republican side, Berrien County Commissioner Ezra Scott, former Dow Chemical employee Michael Hoover, and State Board of Education member Nikki Snyder have all declared their candidacy.
Last year’s midterm elections saw Democrats sweep the state of Michigan, leading to the enactment of liberal priorities such as expanding LGBT protections and becoming the first state to repeal a right-to-work law in over 50 years. Michigan Republicans have only won two Senate races in the last half-century.
