Raiders WR Henry Ruggs Will Be Charged With ‘DUI Resulting In Death’ Following Tuesday Car Crash

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III will be charged with DUI resulting in death following a car crash early Tuesday morning, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. 

“On Nov. 2, at approximately 3:39 a.m., the LVMPD responded to a traffic collision near the intersection of South Rainbow Boulevard and South Spring Valley Parkway, involving a Chevrolet Corvette and a Toyota Rav4,” LVMPD posted to Twitter. “Responding officers located the Toyota on fire. Fire department personnel responded and located a deceased victim inside the Toyota. The preliminary investigation indicates the front of the Chevrolet collided with the rear of the Toyota.”

“The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 22-year-old Henry Rugs (sic) III, remained on scene and showed signs of impairment. He was transported to UMC hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Ruggs will be charged with DUI resulting in death.”

Ruggs, a second-year receiver drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama, has 24 receptions for 469 yards and two touchdowns through seven games. His 469 receiving yards lead the team. 

“The Raiders are aware of an accident involving Henry Ruggs III that occurred this morning in Las Vegas,” the Raiders said in a statement Tuesday. “We are devastated by the loss of life and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family. We are in the process of gathering information and will have no further comment at this time.”

According to the Associated Press, Ruggs had a female passenger in the vehicle who was taken to the hospital with injuries. He could face anywhere from two to 20 years in prison if convicted, according to ESPN. 

When Ruggs was selected 12th overall by the Raiders, many questioned the selection, as he was taken ahead of wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and former Alabama teammate Jerry Jeudy. But for the Raiders and owner Mark Davis, Ruggs’ speed — he ran a 4.27 40-yard dash at the NFL Draft — was too good to pass up.
