Rachel Maddow Returns From Hiatus, to Only Host Show Once a Week Starting in May

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow returned from her two-month hiatus on Monday and announced that starting in May, she will only host her eponymous show on the network once a week.

The host of The Rachel Maddow Show said on Monday that she used her break from hosting duties to work on other projects, which she will continue to work on as her TV show schedule shifts to a weekly format. Starting in May, she will only host her 9 p.m. show on Mondays. MSNBC has not revealed who will host the 9 p.m. hour Tuesday through Friday beginning in May. Reports have circulated since January about MSNBC executives wooing high-profile talent to the cable news network to replace Maddow.

“So, here’s the plan. I’m back. I’m gonna be here all this month, Monday through Thursday night,” Maddow said on her show Monday. “And then, starting next month, starting in May, I’m gonna be here weekly. I’m gonna be here on Monday nights, again, to give myself just more time to work on some of the other stuff that I’ve got cooking for MSNBC and NBC.”

Maddow, 49, alerted viewers that her show schedule might still change in the future.

“And again, this might change. We will see how things go. But that is the plan as of now. So, now you know. And we will never speak of it again. Enough of that, let’s start the show,” Maddow said.

Maddow, who has been with the network since 2008, also thanked fill-in host Ali Velshi for covering her hosting duties during her hiatus.

“I am also grateful almost beyond words for Ali Velshi, in particular, and for my other colleagues who filled in for me while I was away. … You should be so lucky to ever have a coworker as great as Ali Velshi,” Maddow said.

MSNBC did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s questions about who would host the 9 p.m. hour on MSNBC in May on days Maddow is not hosting.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki is reportedly leaving the Biden administration in May to join MSNBC. In February, it was reported that Psaki could be brought on to the network to replace Maddow.

In March, it was also reported that MSNBC considered bringing back former political commentator Keith Olbermann to replace Maddow.
