Quinnipiac Shows Trump Leading DeSantis in ‘24 Matchup
A recent survey from Quinnipiac University Poll indicates that former President Donald Trump remains slightly ahead of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
This survey shows that Trump has the support of just over half of Republicans and GOP-leaning voters, while DeSantis retains the support of about four-in-ten. The numbers reflect a five-point difference between the two potential candidates.
However, when the survey includes 15 potential or declared candidates for the nomination, Trump’s lead slips to 47%, while DeSantis garners 33% of support. Other candidates, including former Vice President Mike Pence and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, received less than 5% of the vote.
The results of this survey are largely the same as the previous poll conducted by Quinnipiac earlier this month.
Despite Trump’s lead, a majority of voters agreed that he should be disqualified from running for the presidency again if criminal charges are filed against him. According to the survey, 57% of all voters believe that Trump should be disqualified, while 38% do not. The survey also reveals that 88% of Democrats, 55% of independents, and 23% of Republicans support disqualifying Trump if he is charged with a crime.
The poll surveyed 1,788 adults from March 23-27, 2023, including 671 Republicans and GOP-leaning voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.3 percentage points for the total sample and +/- 3.8 percentage points for the Republican and GOP-leaning sample.
Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy noted that Trump’s political resurgence remains strong, while DeSantis and other potential candidates have yet to establish themselves as viable alternatives.
