Dueling demonstrators clashed as the Proud Boys and Antifa brawled in Portland, Oregon. Authorities said more than 100 people gathered in the northeast region of the city on Sunday.

Several demonstrators were seen lighting fireworks, dispersing chemical spray and shooting paint balls. Additionally, a man with a handgun opened fire near a separate group in downtown, in turn, sending demonstrators running.

This came after Mayor Ted Wheeler and other city leaders held a virtual “Choose Love” conference ahead of the planned protests to denounce violence.

“Anyone that comes into our community and is spreading their hate, their racism, their zelophobia, their white supremist predilections…all of that is very intimidating to people who are here, particularly people of color it causes people to be fearful,” stated the mayor.

Wheeler and the Portland Police Bureau chief said officers will take a hands-off approach to the demonstrations.
