Prominent Trans Activist Sentenced to Life in Prison for ‘Most Depraved Crime’ Judge Has Ever Seen
Dana Rivers, a longtime transgender activist, has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2016 murder of a lesbian couple and their son. This shocking crime has left the nation in disbelief.
Rivers, formerly known as David Warfield, gained national fame in 1999 for standing up against discrimination. After being fired from the Center Unified School District in Sacramento for discussing gender transitioning with students, Rivers sued and won a $150,000 settlement, according to the Mercury News.
The horrific incident took place when Rivers attacked two women, aged 56 and 57, in their own bed while they were sleeping. Both women and their 19-year-old son were shot, and one of the women was brutally stabbed 47 times. Rivers then set their garage on fire, adding to the horror of the crime.
“This is the most depraved crime I ever handled in the criminal justice system in 33 years. Frankly, you deserve to spend the rest of your life in prison,” Judge Scott Patton stated during the court hearing, as reported by the Mercury News.
Rivers was apprehended on the day of the murders, November 11, 2016, while covered in blood as they left the victims’ home, according to the report.
Aside from activism, Rivers was known for pressuring women’s only events to include male participants.
Rivers was involved in a campaign against the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival (MichFest), urging the group to admit male participants despite their “womyn-born-womyn-only” policy, as reported by Reduxx.
Rivers, a male who identifies as a woman, had initially befriended one of the female victims through an all-women motorcycle club. However, their friendship soured after the woman left the club, according to the Mercury News.
Tragically, Rivers rekindled the friendship with sinister intentions, leading to the triple murder. During the trial process, Rivers attempted to claim self-defense and later insanity, as revealed by Mercury News.
