Buttigieg: An Unexpected Target for the Far Left
Pete Buttigieg Faces Criticism from Progressive Activists
Since his appointment as secretary of the Department of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg has become a target of protesters and activists from an unlikely source — the progressive arm of his own party.
Over the past year, Buttigieg has faced numerous transportation failures, most notably the Southwest holiday travel disaster in 2022. Recently, he has received heavy backlash from progressive activists for his support of Israel and his work on climate change.
Thanksgiving Travel Assurance
Buttigieg assured the public that there would be fewer problems with air travel during the Thanksgiving season, following last year’s travel nightmare that resulted in cancellations and delayed flights affecting an estimated 2 million passengers. Southwest Airlines alone lost $220 million in the final three months of 2022.
This season, the absence of travel problems has kept progressives off Buttigieg’s back, unlike last year when lawmakers like Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) questioned the Department of Transportation’s handling of the issues.
“Nearly six months ago @BernieSanders & I called for Buttigieg to implement fines & penalties on airlines for cancelling flights. Why were these recommendations not followed?” the California congressman had posted on X, then known as Twitter. “This mess with Southwest could have been avoided. We need bold action.”
Former Ohio Democratic state Sen. Nina Turner also criticized Buttigieg, calling him ”unqualified” and at the “bidding of corporations.”
“There is a direct line from Secretary Buttigieg to the Southwest Airlines debacle and we shouldn’t pretend there isn’t,” Turner said last year.
Climate Activist Pushback
More recently, Buttigieg has faced pushback from climate activists, including the left-wing organization Climate Defiance. During his recent speech at Michigan State University on the Biden administration’s infrastructure investments, protesters heckled him, chanting “Petrol Pete” before being escorted out by law enforcement.
“The Secretary of Transportation — now known as Petro Pete — is actively considering new oil export terminals that would be worse for the climate than Keystone,” Climate Defiance posted on X on Nov. 29 ahead of the protest. “We confronted him last month and we will confront him again tonight.”
A month ago, protesters disrupted a petrochemical project in Texas, displaying signs that said, “You’re a climate coward.” One of their chants was, “Stop Petro Pete.”
Israel-Hamas Conflict
Buttigieg has also been targeted by activists who support Gaza in the war between Israel and Hamas. During a speaking engagement at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, protesters picketed in the parking garage, calling for a ceasefire in the conflict. Many expressed their refusal to vote for Biden in 2024 due to the administration’s silence about Palestinian deaths.
Criticism of Jet Record
Both progressives and conservatives have criticized Buttigieg for his jet record. Despite referring to climate change as an urgent “crisis,” Buttigieg took at least 18 flights on private jets between early 2021 and mid-2022. Private jets are significantly more polluting than commercial airfare and trains.
In 2020, Buttigieg faced criticism from rival Beto O’Rourke for his use of private jets.
How do progressives feel about Buttigieg’s stance on climate change and why?
Ed” for the position of transportation secretary. Turner, a prominent progressive activist, expressed her disappointment with Buttigieg’s stance on climate change, stating that his efforts were not enough to combat the urgent crisis.
“We need someone who will prioritize addressing the climate emergency,” Turner said during an interview on a progressive podcast. “Buttigieg’s approach is merely a band-aid solution that fails to address the root causes of the problem.”
Progressive activists argue that Buttigieg’s support of Israel also goes against their values. They criticize his refusal to condemn Israel’s actions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and his support for continuing military aid to the country. This stance diverges from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, which has been increasingly critical of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians.
Buttigieg, however, maintains that his decisions are based on a pragmatic approach to the issues at hand. He argues that taking a more moderate stance allows for better negotiations and progress towards achieving practical solutions.
A balancing act
Buttigieg’s situation highlights the challenging balance that progressive leaders often face when taking on positions of power. On one hand, they have the pressure to appease the progressive base that helped get them into power. On the other hand, they must navigate the realities and complexities of governing, which often require more pragmatic approaches that may not align with the ideals of their base.
This tension is not unique to Buttigieg or the transportation sector. It is a common struggle for progressive politicians who find themselves in positions of power. They are expected to push for radical change and uphold their party’s values, but they also face the realities of compromise and incremental progress that are often necessary in government.
Progressive activists argue that making compromises and taking a more moderate approach can lead to stagnation and a failure to address the urgent issues facing society. They believe that bold, transformative change is necessary to achieve real progress.
However, Buttigieg’s supporters argue that his approach is pragmatic and effective in achieving tangible results. They believe that progress is made through collaboration and finding common ground, even if it means deviating from the progressive agenda.
The way Forward
As Buttigieg continues to face criticism from progressive activists, the question remains: Can he strike a balance between appeasing his base and pursuing effective policies? His ability to navigate these challenges will determine his success as transportation secretary and his future political career.
For progressive activists, their focus remains on pushing for more radical change and holding their party leaders accountable to their values. Whether Buttigieg can keep them satisfied while also achieving his goals remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Buttigieg will have to demonstrate his ability to address transportation issues and implement policies that align with the overall objectives of his party. This delicate balancing act will require skill, diplomacy, and a willingness to engage with the progressive activists who are holding him accountable.
