Progressive lawmaker cautions Biden about potential loss of Muslim vote due to Israel support.

Progressive Rep. ⁣Pramila Jayapal Warns Biden’s Support for Israel May Cost Him Arab and Muslim Votes

Progressive Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) expressed concern on Sunday that President Joe Biden’s unwavering support for Israel in its ongoing conflict ⁤with Hamas terrorists could potentially alienate Arab and Muslim voters.

As the chair of the far-left Congressional Progressive Caucus, Jayapal told NBC News⁣ that Biden needs to handle the Israel-Hamas conflict⁢ carefully to avoid damaging his chances of ⁣re-election next year.

“I have ⁢been one of President⁤ Biden’s biggest supporters. I have been proud⁤ to be a partner as he has been courageous and ⁣strong on the domestic front,” Jayapal stated‌ in an interview on Oct. 29.

“I think that the president needs to be just as courageous ‍on this issue so‍ that we keep⁣ the unity ‍within⁢ our country,” she added, emphasizing her caucus’s position.

Jayapal believes‍ that the American people are not fully aligned with the Biden administration’s stance on the conflict. While they support Israel’s right to defend itself and exist, they do not condone a cycle⁤ of war crimes. She urges‌ President Biden to‍ proceed with caution.

“I am certainly concerned about his approach⁢ to⁤ this,” she noted, stressing that President Biden must ⁣appeal ⁢to a higher‍ moral standard.

President Biden ‍has consistently expressed his ‍support for Israel following the ⁣Hamas attack on ‍Oct. 7, which resulted in⁣ the deaths of over 1,400 people, including 32⁢ Americans. Hamas currently holds over 200 hostages, using them as bargaining ‍chips despite‍ international calls‍ for their release.

Israel, on the other hand,⁢ is determined to dismantle ⁤Hamas and⁤ secure its borders, conducting airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 8,000 as of Oct. ⁣29, according to⁢ the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

During⁤ a call ‍with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu ‌on Oct. 29, President⁤ Biden affirmed Israel’s right⁤ to ‍self-defense while emphasizing the importance of ⁣protecting⁤ civilians ⁣in accordance with international humanitarian law, as stated by the White House.

Arab Americans are growing increasingly frustrated with the ⁤Biden administration’s‌ failure to support a ceasefire. Abdullah Hammoud, mayor of Dearborn,⁢ Michigan, criticized the Israeli government’s actions in cutting off ⁤essential ‍resources to the Gaza ⁣Strip, which has a significant Arab and Muslim population.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced “emergency peaceful protests” in Maryland to demand a ceasefire ⁤in Gaza.

In key battleground ⁣states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, Arab Americans ⁣make up ‍a significant portion of the ⁣vote. Their support played a crucial role in President Biden’s victory in 2020.

Democratic Representative Cori Bush (D-Mo.), ‍a prominent⁢ Black Lives⁤ Matter⁣ activist,‌ introduced the “Ceasefire Now resolution” on Oct. 16. The resolution calls ⁢on the Biden administration⁢ to push for ⁣an immediate de-escalation ‍and ceasefire in ‍Israel and the Gaza Strip.

“The United States bears a ‌unique responsibility to exhaust every diplomatic tool at our⁤ disposal to prevent ⁢mass atrocities and save ⁤lives,” said Bush in a press release. “With thousands of lives lost and millions more at stake, we need ⁢a⁣ ceasefire now.”

The resolution has garnered support from several ‍Democratic representatives.

The Biden ⁤administration has⁢ stated that it will not support a ceasefire until Hamas releases all hostages.

UK Foreign Secretary⁢ James Cleverly has indicated that Hamas ‌shows no signs of abiding by calls for a ceasefire.

Jayapal, however, ⁤warned‌ that Biden’s position ⁣on the Israel-Hamas conflict could have serious consequences when it‍ comes to garnering support from Arab and Muslim voters ⁣in future elections.

“I do think there are fundamental human rights that are being violated in‍ the ⁣occupied territories, ‌and I’m hearing that not just from my Muslim constituents, but from constituents ⁤across the board,” she said.

She expressed concern that Biden’s‌ handling of the⁢ crisis and his unequivocal ⁢support for Israel could‌ drive a wedge between Arab and ⁢Muslim voters and the Democratic Party.

“If the Democratic Party ⁢is‌ unable ⁣to recognize the pain⁢ and the ⁤suffering and the violation of human rights and the equality of rights that needs ⁣to take place, I think it ⁤really does put our Democratic Party at risk,” ‍Jayapal‌ cautioned.

Jayapal’s comments come as⁢ tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, with the conflict between Israel and Hamas resulting in hundreds of deaths and widespread destruction.

While Republican lawmakers have largely expressed support for Israel in⁢ the conflict, progressive Democrats like⁢ Jayapal have called for a more balanced ‌approach in dealing with the⁣ crisis.

Jayapal shared ⁣her perspective on how⁢ the⁢ US should handle the Israel-Hamas‌ conflict, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and dialogue.

“It’s important for the president ⁢and for our government to ⁢work together ⁤to find a solution here that ‌is not⁢ just about winning or losing, but really⁣ about ‌the lives of people that ⁤are living in constant fear and violence and not being able ‍to have any kind of prosperity ⁣or security,” she said.

Jayapal’s warning ⁢to Biden ⁢reflects a growing divide within ‍the Democratic Party regarding the Israel-Hamas ⁢conflict and US-Israel relations.⁤ While some Democrats, particularly those on the progressive left, advocate ⁢for a ⁣more critical⁤ stance towards ⁣Israel, others⁢ maintain a longstanding bipartisan support for the country.

The outcome of the Israel-Hamas ⁤conflict and ⁤its ‍impact on American politics, particularly within‌ the Arab and Muslim communities, ‍remains to be ‍seen. However, Jayapal’s remarks‌ serve⁣ as a‍ reminder that maintaining a ‍delicate balance between support for Israel and⁢ addressing⁢ human rights ‌concerns is essential for political leaders seeking to⁣ secure broad-based support.
