Priyanka Chopra Defends Surrogacy Decision

Actress Priyanka Chopra We were open and honest about the birth of our daughter daughterMalti Mari and hinted at the reasons she used a surrogate in order to increase her family.

Chopra musician Nick Jonas, Nick’s husband, welcomed the baby in January 2022. British Vogue asked the 40-year old star why she chose to use a surrogate over getting pregnant. 

“I had medical complications,” Chopra told The February cover story publication. “This was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely, and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.”

She went on to describe the backlash she’s received for choosing surrogacy.

Critics of surrogacy, and other reproductive technology, claim that it turns children into commodities. They also point out that surrogates are often chosen from women who have less financial resources to be used by celebrities and wealthy people. The child may not know their biological parents if they are born to an egg donor or donated sperm.

“You don’t know me,” The “Matrix: Resurrections” alum went on. “You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make my medical history, or my daughter’s, public doesn’t give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were.”

During The interview, Chopra also went into detail about her experience following Malti’s premature birth.

“I was in the OR when she came out,” the “Baywatch” Recalled actress “She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed in her tiny body to intubate her.”

According to the mom of one, she spent long hours bonding with her child as she remained in the neonatal intensive car unit (NICU). “We spent every single day with her on my chest, on my husband’s chest,” Chopra spoke about that time. “I didn’t know if she would make it or not.”

Taslima Nasreen was a Bangladeshi poet/novelist. went viral for reacting to Chopra and Jonas’ baby news by saying, “How do those mothers feel when they get their readymade babies through surrogacy? Do they have the same feelings for the babies like the mothers who give birth to the babies?”

Chopra and Jonas were not the only celebs to use surrogates to have their child. Khloe Kardashian and Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, Kristin Wiig and Gabrielle Union are just a few of the other celebrities who have used surrogates.
