“At the federal level, the executive branch does put a thumb on the pulse of this with Title IX enforcement,” Doescher said Monday on CNN’s This Morning.

During the previous election cycle, Republicans ran on what they described as “common sense policies” such as blocking transgender women from competing in women’s sports, and criticized Democrats who opposed a ban. However, several Democrats, especially those in red-leaning districts, seem to be changing their messaging and backtracking on pro-transgender stances in their latest campaign ads.
An Iowa congressional candidate, state Rep. Lindsay James, was one of several Democrats who shifted to a more moderate stance on transgender athletes, despite previously voting against restrictions.
“We need to protect kids, and we need common sense rules to keep sports fair, for boys and for girls,” James said. “Parents know what’s best for our kids. Washington needs to stay out of it.”
James previously voted against prohibiting biological males in women’s sports for grade schools and colleges, and she opposed measures to notify parents if their child wanted to change their gender identity at schools.
Doescher responded to the issue of the Trump administration preventing transgender individuals from changing their sex marker on passports, allowing only M or F based on the biological sex at birth. She said most people tend to focus on what’s happening with the children.
“And I think the passport thing doesn’t necessarily get [the] media and voters all that excited because it deals with adults,” Doescher said. “But the issue is with the children, right? If you’re over 18 and you want to call yourself they/them, whatever, but it’s about the kids.”

Doescher said dialogue surrounding the transgender community predominantly focuses on transgender girls and women changing in the locker rooms or other intimate spaces, or taking scholarship opportunities from those who are biologically female.
“They’re being freaked out because biological boys are being allowed to compete against girls and women’s sports,” Doescher said.
