BOSTON Police Pursuing Charges Against Rhode Island Men in Death of Fan at Patriots Game
Police in Massachusetts announced on Thursday that they are actively pursuing assault and battery charges, as well as disorderly conduct charges, against three individuals from Rhode Island in connection with the recent tragic death of a fan at a New England Patriots game.
The Foxborough Police Department released a statement indicating their intention to bring charges against the men involved in the altercation that took place on September 17th at Gillette Stadium, leading to the untimely passing of 53-year-old Dale Mooney from Newmarket, New Hampshire. The names of the individuals have not been disclosed, and it is unclear when the probable cause hearing will take place.
During the game, which ended with a 24-17 victory for the visiting Miami Dolphins, Mooney was struck in the head multiple times during a confrontation with several other fans. While the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office determined that Mooney did not suffer a traumatic injury in the stands, they did acknowledge that he had a pre-existing medical condition.
Mooney was immediately transported to a hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead. The district attorney’s office has not provided specific details regarding Mooney’s medical condition. The official cause of death is still undetermined, pending further tests conducted by the chief medical examiner’s office.
An eyewitness named Joey Kilmartin, who was present at the game, recounted seeing Mooney, a devoted Patriots fan, engaged in a heated exchange with another spectator. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, and as people attempted to intervene, Mooney fell back into his seat, clearly unconscious.
Gillette Stadium officials expressed their profound sadness over Mooney’s passing, emphasizing that he was not only a lifelong Patriots fan but also a dedicated season ticket holder for over three decades.
