Police Discover Suspect in Teacher’s Murder​ Already in Custody

Authorities in⁣ Maryland⁤ have made a shocking discovery in the case of the July⁤ murder ‌of beloved teacher Mariame Sylla. It turns out ​that‌ the suspect was⁣ already in police custody.

Sylla, 59, was ⁤reported missing on July 30 after⁢ going for ⁣a walk in a park ‌in ‍Greenbelt. Two days later,‍ human remains ​were ⁣found just four blocks away on the​ 7300 block of Old Alexander Ferry Road. DNA testing confirmed that‍ the remains belonged​ to Sylla.

On⁣ the same day the remains were⁢ discovered, August 1, Harold Francis Landon III, 33, was taken into police custody for an unrelated domestic assault charge. Through various investigative techniques, detectives were able to identify Landon as the suspect and have now filed first-degree murder ‌charges⁢ against him.

“Ms. Sylla was not only a beloved teacher but also a cherished ​member of the Greenbelt community. Her murder is ​an absolute tragedy,” ‍said Prince ⁤George County Police ⁣Chief Malik Aziz. “We hope that Landon’s arrest brings some comfort to her family‍ and all those who knew and ​loved her.”

Aziz expressed his gratitude to the⁢ Homicide Unit, the Greenbelt‍ Police Department, ⁢and⁤ all partner agencies ‌for their unwavering dedication in ⁣finding Sylla’s murderer and ensuring justice‍ is served.

During‌ a​ press conference on Friday, Aziz ​stated that the motive for the​ murder is still ⁤unknown, but he emphasized that ​any motive for such a heinous crime ⁢is “depraved.” Investigators are also working to determine the ⁣exact ‍cause of Sylla’s death and​ the location and time of the murder.

Landon’s ‍bond‍ review is scheduled​ for Tuesday, ⁢following the holiday weekend.

Sylla was a teacher at Dora Kennedy French ⁢Immersion School and is survived by her sister, Fati Toure.
