Planned Parenthood to invest $10 million in North Carolina’s Democratic Party

A well-known abortion-rights group, Planned Parenthood, is set to invest a significant $10 million in North Carolina to support ‌President Joe Biden’s reelection and gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein. This move aims to emphasize abortion rights during the upcoming elections, as reported by the New York Times. Planned⁤ Parenthood South Atlantic is channeling ⁢the funds towards digital advertising initiatives.

A prominent abortion-rights group is planning its largest-ever investment into one critical swing state in hopes of emphasizing abortion rights in November.

A political arm of Planned Parenthood will spend $10 million in North Carolina this election cycle to boost President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein, according to the New York Times.

Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is contributing the money to digital advertisements, new field offices, and a canvassing operation concentrated in critical swing counties in North Carolina.

“As we head into November, all eyes are on North Carolina because abortion access across the entire region will be determined by the results of this election,” said Emily Thompson, the deputy director of Planned Parenthood Votes South Atlantic and spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Votes, the group’s national super PAC.

“Our success is absolutely critical this year to protect abortion access and defend the bodily autonomy of every North Carolinian,” she added.

The money will be critical for Democrats in a state they lost to former President Donald Trump by less than 2 points — the narrowest loss they had in 2020. Democrats have already spent time blasting Trump for his new abortion stance, and the added funds will give them the firepower to reinforce their claims.

More locally, the money is expected to go toward Planned Parenthood’s assault on North Carolina gubernatorial Republican nominee Mark Robinson, who has been staunchly anti-abortion, though he has recently softened his stance.

One Planned Parenthood attack flyer quoted Robinson, the lieutenant governor of North Carolina, as saying, “Once you make a baby, it’s not your body anymore. I will never capitulate on that, and I don’t care who it hurts.”

A recent Meredith College poll shows Trump leading North Carolina by 2 points and Robinson trailing Stein by 9 points in the general election.
