Planned Parenthood Reacts To SCOTUS Abortion Ruling

Planned Parenthood reacted Friday to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, promising that the abortion giant will keep fighting.

“The Supreme Court just overturned Roe v. Wade, ending our constitutional right to abortion. We know you may be feeling a lot of things right now — hurt, anger, confusion. Whatever you feel is OK. We’re here with you — and we’ll never stop fighting for you,” Planned Parenthood said in a tweet.

The Supreme Court released a 6-3 decision Friday morning overturning Roe, the landmark 1973 abortion case that legalized abortion nationwide.

The nation’s largest abortion provider also tweeted out a phone number and website to help people find access to abortion.

“If you need an abortion, help is available to make sure you get the care you need,” Planned Parenthood assured.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the abortion provider’s political advocacy arm, had a more outraged take on the Court’s move.

“The Supreme Court has taken away our right to abortion and overturned Roe v. Wade, opening the floodgates for states across the country to ban abortion. The court has failed us all — but this is far from over,” Planned Parenthood Action Fund tweeted.

“We know what politicians want because it’s already happening: to ban abortion state by state—& eventually a national ban. But, like generations before us, we’ll fight for each other,” the advocacy arm added.

On its website, Planned Parenthood’s activism arm solicited “urgent” donations in the wake of Roe v. Wade‘s demise.

“Help protect access to safe, legal abortion and reproductive rights with an urgent gift to Planned Parenthood Action Fund now,” the abortion advocacy group said.

The Supreme Court’s decision was the result of a Mississippi case called Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which dealt with Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban.

The decision also overturned another landmark abortion case involving Planned Parenthood itself, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which in 1992 doubled down on the right to abortion access established by Roe v. Wade.

The court’s decision Friday tosses the issue of legal abortion access back to the states, nearly half of which are expected to ban or tightly restrict abortion.

Clinics in some states have already suspended abortion services.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin suspended abortion services at its three clinics in the state that offer abortions until a court provides more clarification on whether the state’s abortion ban is enforceable.

“This news is devastating,” said Tanya Atkinson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Wisconsin. “Deciding if or when to become a parent is one of the most personal, life-changing decisions people make. You deserve the right to control your own body, life, and future. And access the health care that you need.”

South Dakota’s sole abortion clinic, a Planned Parenthood location in Sioux Falls, announced last week that it would halt abortions.

“We can’t in good faith schedule patients for abortions when they would have to go out of state anyway,” said Emily Bisek, vice president of strategic communications for the Planned Parenthood North Central States.
