Person killed in stabbing in Atlanta near popular Beltline trail

A man died after being stabbed on Sunday afternoon near Atlanta’s Beltline, a popular walking trail. The incident occurred at 725 Ponce de Leon Avenue around 4 p.m., involving a 29-year-old male resident. Authorities police identified and detained the suspect, 54-year-old Jonathan Hamby, who has a lengthy criminal history and was on active probation for an earlier aggravated assault. The police believe the attack resulted from a verbal altercation that escalated, with the suspect retrieving a knife and fatally stabbing the victim. The weapon used has been recovered. This incident follows another stabbing on the beltline in May, which resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman. The story is ongoing and further updates are expected.

A man died after being stabbed on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia, near the Beltline, a popular walking trail that stretches through much of the city.

The incident occurred at 725 Ponce de Leon Avenue shortly after 4 p.m., according to Chief of Police Darin Schierbaum. The victim is a 29-year-old male whose last known address indicates he was a resident of the city.

“Officers were also able to locate and take into custody the individual that we believe was responsible for this stabbing attack,” Schierbaum said. “Currently at public safety headquarters, we have a 54-year-old Jonathan Hamby. Mr. Hamby has an extensive criminal history and has been arrested multiple times by law enforcement, and we’re currently showing 30 previous arrest cycles. We’re showing that he is a convicted felon, and we’re showing that he was on active probation for an aggravated assault that occurred in Brookhaven.”

Schierbaum also said police believe they have recovered the weapon used in the attack, and that “this was a verbal argument that escalated” and “we do believe Mr. Hamby then took the knife that he was armed with and stabbed the victim, and he passed away as a result of that attack.”

POLICE ARREST 19-YEAR-OLD CONNECTED WITH DEADLY GREAT FALLS STABBING OF WOMAN

A 23-year-old woman was also stabbed to death on the Beltline in May. The popular walking trail is often used for commuting and recreational activities.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
