Pelosi endorsed Harry Dunn in the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 3rd district, along with Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX), on Friday.
“I saw Officer Dunn’s courage firsthand in the face of unprecedented violence and insurrection on January 6th, when he stood firm to protect the Capitol, the Constitution and democracy itself,” Pelosi said in a statement.
Some rioters on Jan. 6 posed in Pelosi’s office and actively sought her out as she was evacuated from the Capitol.
“I am personally grateful for the life-saving protection that he provided to my staff, to me and to so many others in the Capitol. All are in awe of his generosity and conviction in sharing his harrowing story from that dark day, testifying before our Select Committee to Investigate January 6th.”
Dunn served as a Capitol Police officer for 15 years and announced his congressional candidacy in January, emphasizing his role in Jan. 6.
“On January 6th, 2021, I did my duty as a police officer and as an American and defended our nation’s Capitol from violent insurrectionists,” Dunn said in a news release. “Today, I’m running for Congress because the forces that spurred that violent attack are still at work and as a patriotic American, it is my duty to defend our democracy.”
The notable endorsements seek to push Dunn ahead in a crowded Democratic primary field that has seen intraparty conflict.
Dunn recently traded barbs with the United Democracy Project, an AIPAC-affiliated super PAC that paid for $600,000 worth of ads in support of his primary opponent, state Sen. Sarah Elfreth.

Fundraising indicates Dunn has little to worry about in the race; he’s raised $3.7 million compared to Elfreth’s $915,000. However, polling suggests it could be a tight primary.
A recent poll conducted by Dunn’s campaign shows him ahead of Elfreth by four points in the Democratic primary for Rep. John Sarbanes’s (D-MD) seat. Sarbanes declined to run for reelection.
