The entertainment world mourns the loss of Paul Reubens, a talented actor and comedian who captured the hearts of audiences in the 1980s as the lovable children’s TV star Pee-wee Herman. The sad news was confirmed on Monday through a heartfelt statement posted on his Facebook page.
“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer, and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy, and belief in the importance of kindness,” the statement read.
“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit,” it continued.
“A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”
Reubens kept his battle with cancer private, shocking fans with the news of his passing. In his final statement, he apologized for not sharing his illness with the public sooner.
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” he wrote.
“I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters,” he added. “I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”
Reubens first introduced the world to the character of Pee-wee Herman while working with the renowned Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings. He gained widespread fame as the lead in the 1985 film “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and as the star of the beloved television series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” which aired from 1986 to 1991 and received an impressive 15 Emmy Awards.
In 1991, Reubens faced a personal scandal when he was arrested for indecent exposure at an adult movie theater in Sarasota, Florida. He later pleaded no contest to the charge and withdrew from public appearances as Pee-wee Herman until his triumphant return in 2010.
Reubens made a comeback in 2016 with the Netflix film “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday,” which he co-wrote and starred in. His talent and creativity continued to shine, reminding fans of his enduring legacy.
In honor of Paul Reubens, his representatives have requested that expressions of sympathy be made in his parents’ honor to organizations dedicated to researching diseases such as cancer, dementia, and Alzheimer’s.
