Actor Owen Wilson declined a $12 million role in a movie about O.J. Simpson’s innocence. The film, titled “The Juice,” directed by Joshua Newton, portrays Simpson as innocent of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Although acquitted in 1995, Simpson was found liable in a 1997 civil trial, with damages awarded to the victims’ families. Actor Owen Wilson reportedly turned down a $12 million payday to star in a movie about the late O.J. Simpson.
The project, willed as a “satirical thriller” called “The Juice,” is currently in production with British filmmaker Joshua Newton taking the lead.
The movie depicts Simpson as being innocent of the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. The former NFL Hall of Famer was acquitted of the crime in 1995 following a high-profile criminal trial, but many people believe the verdict was incorrect.
A jury found Simpson liable for the murders during a civil trial in 1997 and awarded the victims’ families $33.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages.
Newton said he had envisioned Wilson playing attorney Douglas McCann in the film, but the actor shut down initial talks.
“Owen Wilson was perfect for the role,” the filmmaker told Rambler Reporter, per TMZ.
“I actually had a meeting with him in Santa Monica. Everybody loved the script. His agent wanted him to do it. We offered him $12 million dollars,” he continued. “But at the end of the lunch, Owen stood up and said, “If you think I’m going to take the lead role in a movie about how O.J. didn’t do it, you’ve got to be kidding me.’”

Newton went on to say that he found another actor who was “spot on” for the part and that 30 minutes of the film had been completed.
There have been multiple films and documentaries made about the murders and subsequent trial of Simpson over the years. The infamous case has been referenced in countless movies, TV shows, songs, and even video games.
The drama with Simpson made headlines earlier this year following his death from cancer at the age of 76. The former Buffalo Bills running back had been released from parole in 2021 after being found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping in 2007. He served nine years in prison for the crime before being released in 2017.
