Oklahoma Bans Trans Procedures For Those Under 26

While A number of states have passed or are currently working on laws that block transgender medical procedures for their children. Oklahoma It is attempting to expand this effort to another level. One new piece of legislation Submitted by State Sen. David Bullard It would effectively ban all medical procedures “gender-affirming care” Patients under 26 years old have to meet a significantly higher standard than those over 18 in most states. The Bill was nicknamed the “Millstone Act” and it’s almost certain to draw a court challenge as soon as it goes into the books. And This is one instance where I believe any potential plaintiffs aged between 18- 25 who challenge the law might be successful in court. (Townhall)

The Oklahoma Ban legislation is in the works “gender-affirming care” for adults under The age of 26, arguing that a person’s brain isn’t fully formed until the age of 25.

Dubbed the Millstone ActThe bill states that “a physician or other healthcare professional shall not provide gender transition procedures to any individual under twenty-six (26) years of age.”

Healthcare Providers are not allowed to prescribe or recommend gender-affirming medical care, such as hormone medication and puberty blocking drugs.

Interestingly, the legislation wasn’t named after someone named Millstone. The Name comes from a passage in the BibleSpecifically, Matthew 18:6 New King James Version. It reads, “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” (One Some of the more difficult passages in the Good Book.)

The Refer to “little ones” is significant and it’s part of the reason that this legislation may not ultimately succeed. As As I mentioned, most states that have laws similar to this set the minimum age for these types of medical treatment at 18. ChildrenA minor is someone who is under 18 years old and cannot consent to medical procedures or other matters.

This The bill establishes a minimum age limit of 26 years based on an increasingly popular belief in the medical community that the prefrontal cortex of the brain doesn’t fully finish forming until the age of 25. That’s important because the prefrontal cortex controls “executive brain functions” Complex behavioral performance is one example.

But If Oklahoma If the law allows for this concept to be enshrined, it could have unintended consequences. If adults aren’t mature enough to make medical decisions until they are 26, what else might they be barred from doing? Will They will be able to buy and consume alcohol. Can They enlist in the military to protect their country. Can They can even safely drive a motor vehicle. And even if we’re somehow limiting this restriction to medical procedures, only transgender “treatment” This law bans the use of this word. Can A 25-year-old consents to have a dentist pull a teeth or have an appendix bursting without a note from his parents. This is a very narrow list of restrictions.

Personally, I’m fine with the age limit being set at 18. As I’ve repeatedly said over the course of this debate, if you’re an adult and you want to have your genitals surgically removed or mutilated and can find a doctor to do it for you, go for it. As long as you’re willing to accept the consequences of your decisions, you can have surgery to make yourself look like a snake For all that I care. (Yes(Yes, that was actually done by someone.) But We are bound to protect the rights of our children. And Hormone injections and puberty blocking drugs can cause irreversible harm that cannot be undone. If Oklahoma dials back the minimum age by eight years, I think they’ll have a much better chance of having the law hold up and they would be acting in a manner consistent with other minimum age laws.
