Protests erupted in Ohio following the death of a teenager during a police response to a 9-1-1 call.

During a press conference Tuesday, the Columbus Department of Public Safety released body-cam footage showing 16-year-old Makhia Bryant brandishing what appears to be a kitchen knife before being shot during the encounter. Authorities transported Bryant to a nearby hospital where she later died.

Interim Columbus Police Chief Michael Woods said an investigation is currently underway to determine whether the officer involved acted appropriately.

“The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting the criminal investigation into this incident,” he stated. “At the conclusion of that investigation, the divisional police will conduct an administrative review of the actions of this officer and all officers at the scene.”

The department said it will continue to actively investigate the nature of the incident. As they gather the necessary information, local officials are asking residents to remain calm. Woods noted, “this is a tragic incident for all involved.”
