Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Calls for Sen. Dianne Feinstein to Resign

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is making headlines again, this time calling for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to resign. And honestly, we can’t say we disagree with her.

Feinstein has been in public service for a whopping 45 years, and at 89 years old, her health has severely compromised her ability to do her job. She’s been out with shingles since early March, missing every vote since then, yet still collecting her $174,000 salary to do nothing.

AOC took to the new social media site BlueSky to give Feinstein an ultimatum: resign. “Her refusal to either retire or show up is causing great harm to the judiciary – precisely where repro rights are getting stripped. That failure means now in this precious window Dems can only pass GOP-approved nominees,” AOC wrote.

Feinstein’s Absence is Hurting the Judiciary

AOC is correct. With Feinstein out for a lengthy time, the Judiciary Committee is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, giving the GOP a kind of control to kill nominations they don’t like. Democratic Senate Leader Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) tried to get the Senate to allow another Democratic senator to temporarily serve on the Judiciary Committee, but that effort failed.

Feinstein’s absence is causing great harm to the judiciary, and it’s time for her to step down.

It’s Not About Sexism

When calls for Feinstein to resign began getting louder, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) jumped into the fray to say that it’s sexist. But that’s not the case. Calls for Feinstein to step down have nothing to do with sexism. Instead, it has to do with competency. Feinstein simply cannot do the job anymore, and in reality, she should have retired years ago.

While AOC is only 33 and has been a lawmaker for a little over three years, she’s right to call for Feinstein’s resignation. It’s time for the residents of California to have a senator who can do the job.
