NYC Rep. Malliotakis urges Schumer to address immigrant crisis
A New York City Congresswoman Urges Senate Majority Leader to Act on Illegal Immigration Crisis
A New York City congresswoman is expressing her frustration with the city, state, and federal response to the influx of illegal immigrants in the Big Apple. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican representing Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, is ramping up pressure on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to take action.
Malliotakis will have a House floor vote on Thursday for her bill that aims to prevent the government from using taxpayer money to house illegal immigrants on federal land. However, Schumer stands as a major obstacle in getting the bill to the president’s desk.
“We’ll see if Schumer brings it up for a vote in the Senate,” Malliotakis said. “For someone who advocates for democracy, he never lets it take place.”
This is a common complaint among House Republicans, who often see their legislation ignored in the Democratic-led Senate. Malliotakis believes that the growing illegal immigrant crisis in New York should compel Schumer to act, especially since he has refused to consider other House Republican bills related to the border crisis.
“I fear … that may be the fate of my bill, but we’re going to continue to hold him accountable because he’s from Brooklyn. He’s from the city where the mayor is saying, ‘This is destroying New York City and will bankrupt it,'” Malliotakis said. “Sen. Schumer will do nothing to address [it]. He won’t even acknowledge we have a crisis — and so holding him accountable in his own borough of Brooklyn if he doesn’t let this bill come to the floor for a vote.”
Since 2021, over 200,000 immigrants from the southern border have sought assistance in New York City, including shelter, food, clothing, and work. Many have been transported from Texas as part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s effort to bring attention to the border crisis in blue cities.
In August, the Biden administration blamed Democratic leaders in New York for the lack of assistance in dealing with the immigrant crisis, despite receiving $100 million in aid from Congress. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas sent letters to Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, responding to their demands for more federal help.
Malliotakis has been working with local lawmakers to prevent Brooklyn national parkland from being used as an emergency shelter for illegal immigrants. Her House bill aims to block federal lands from becoming shelter sites for illegal immigrants.
“My parents are immigrants, my constituents. I have immigrant populations from all over the world in my district. And I will tell you that they are equally upset by seeing how individuals who have come through our southern border the wrong way are now being rewarded with free housing and services that they never received and even as citizens don’t receive now,” Malliotakis said.
The House Rules Committee has advanced Malliotakis’ bill, despite strong opposition from the White House. Schumer’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
What are Malliotakis’ proposed solutions for addressing the illegal immigration crisis in a balanced and comprehensive manner
Y bill will be just another one that goes ignored by the Senate,” Malliotakis said. “But I will continue to fight for the interests of my constituents and push for common-sense …solutions to the illegal immigration crisis.”
The city of New York has seen a significant increase in illegal immigration in recent years, with many undocumented immigrants finding their way to the Big Apple in search of better opportunities. This has put a strain on the city’s resources and services, as well as raised concerns about public safety and national security.
Malliotakis argues that it is the federal government’s responsibility to address this crisis and protect the interests of American citizens. However, she believes that Schumer and other Democratic leaders have been more focused on political posturing and obstructing Republican-led initiatives rather than finding real solutions.
“We have a crisis at our doorstep, and yet the Senate Majority Leader refuses to act,” Malliotakis said. “This is a slap in the face to the hardworking taxpayers of New York.”
In addition to her bill, Malliotakis has been vocal about the need for comprehensive immigration reform that addresses both border security and a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants. She believes that a balanced approach is necessary in order to effectively address the issue.
While Malliotakis faces an uphill battle in getting her bill passed in the Senate, she remains determined to fight for her constituents and hold Schumer accountable for his inaction. She is urging New Yorkers to contact their senators and demand action on the illegal immigration crisis.
“We cannot continue to ignore this issue,” Malliotakis emphasized. “It’s time for Schumer to do his job and put the interests of the American people first.”
As the debate on immigration continues, it remains to be seen whether Schumer and the Senate will take action to address the illegal immigration crisis in New York City. Malliotakis and other House Republicans will continue to push for their bills and advocate for solutions that prioritize the interests of American citizens. Only time will tell if their efforts will yield any significant results.
