NRCC reported over $16,000 stolen by unknown actor
Teh National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) reported that over $16,300 was stolen by an unidentified foreign actor during a payment attempt on July 7, involving Ranger Wi-Fi Consulting, a Texas-based security firm. The funds targeted were intended for a House Republican campaign, though the destination of the stolen money remains unknown. The NRCC indicated that a security breach compromised their vendor systems, leading to the interception of a payment, but they have no evidence pinpointing the actor’s location. The committee is actively working with banking and legal authorities to recover the funds and prevent future incidents. This theft occurs amid heightened political activity ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, where Republicans face notable challenges in maintaining their House majority due to Democratic efforts targeting contested districts. Other political committees, including the democratic national Committee (DNC) and individual candidates like Mike Rogers, have also experienced financial scams recently, such as email impersonation and fraudulent invoices, emphasizing increasing cybersecurity threats in election campaigns.

The reported fraud occurred July 7, when the NRCC tried to pay a bill from Ranger Wi-Fi Consulting, the campaign committee for House Republicans told the Federal Election Commission in an official form. The wireless technology and security firm is based in Texas, but it’s unclear where the fraud payment went.

The NRCC said the theft was committed by a foreign-based actor, but it told NOTUS in a report published Sunday that it has no evidence of the actor’s location.
“A vendor’s systems were compromised and an unauthorized party intercepted a payment as a result,” NRCC spokesman Will Kiley told the news outlet.
“Protecting donor funds is a top priority for the NRCC,” he said. “We caught it immediately, we’re working to recover the funds, and we’ve taken steps to ensure it can’t happen again.”
In a separate document, the NRCC said it is “working diligently with banking and legal authorities to recover the funds.”
The reported fraud comes as the campaign committee gears up for the midterm elections this fall. Republicans are at risk of losing their narrow majority in the House, as Democrats have been aggressively targeting vulnerable GOP districts.
The NRCC isn’t the only major political committee to have recently been affected by theft.

The Democratic National Committee, which is already racked with about $18 million in debt, lost nearly $29,000 to a scammer posing as DNC Chairman Ken Martin in a fraudulent email sent to a staffer in February 2025. At the time, Martin had just begun his role as chairman. NOTUS reported on the scam only last month.
Individual candidates have also been targeted by fraudsters this election cycle. Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee for an open Senate seat in Michigan, lost roughly $16,700 in cash to a suspected cyberthief this spring after his campaign paid a fraudulent invoice to a vendor’s email that got hacked.
