‘Not a surprise’ Harris reached out to socialists: Byron York
Washington Examiner’s chief political correspondent Byron York reports that Vice President Kamala Harris has been reaching out to socialist leaders, signaling her awareness that much of the Democratic Party’s energy is coming from the left wing. York suggests Harris aims to secure support from progressives as socialist candidates gain prominence in primaries, and notes her interest in presidential ambitions.Although Harris hasn’t officially announced a 2024 or 2028 run, she has indicated openness to the idea. York also highlights her efforts to connect with leftist figures like NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, possibly to position herself favorably for a future presidential bid. Additionally, Harris appears to be distancing herself from President Joe Biden, especially on issues like Israel, indicating an attempt to align more with the progressive wing of the party ahead of potential future campaigns.
Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York said former Vice President Kamala Harris contacted socialist leaders because she sees all the “energy” in the Democratic Party is coming from the left wing.
York said on Fox & Friends on Thursday that Harris wants to be president and that she wants the progressives in the party to support her, as socialist candidates across the country are dominating in primaries.

“Whether you think it’s realistic or not, [Harris] wants to be president of the United States,” York said. “She sees herself as a really viable candidate.”
York’s comments come after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed Harris has been in touch with him over the past few months, a move some see as the former vice president strengthening her relationships with the left wing of the party before announcing a White House bid for 2028.
While Harris hasn’t announced a presidential campaign, she has left the door open on numerous occasions when pressed on the topic.
York said it’s not a surprise that Harris contacted Mamdani.
“I mean, how often have we been talking in the last couple of weeks — all the energy is on the socialist left, so it’s really not a surprise at all that she would reach out to them [and] try to make connections with them,” York said.

York said Harris is attempting to distance herself from former President Joe Biden in these conversations, especially because he wasn’t “sympathetic to their cause.”
“For a Democrat, he was pretty loyal to Israel, and that is not what they want to hear, and I suspect that she is distancing herself in these conversations … from Joe Biden’s record,” York said.
