A billion crabs have disappeared from the Bering Sea.

TheAlaska Department of Game and Fish has canceled the winter snow crab season in the Bering Sea. CbS News said the news is bad for commercial fishermen and seafood lovers but it could be good for the ecosystem as well.

“Wesaw the most significant decline we have ever seen in the snow crab population, that was very startling, I think, for everyone,“ he said.

TheDiscovery reality TV series “Deadliest Catch“ has dramatized the dangers of harvesting snow crabs and the Alaska king crab from the tempestuous Bering Sea. The show has been aired since 2005 and is narrated by Mike Rowe.

State Fish and Game researcher Ben Daly said he does not know very well what happened to Alaska ‘s crab population.

“Management of the Bering Sea Snow Crab must now concentrate on conservation and rebuilding the stock,“ Alaska Game and Fish said in a statement. “Our efforts to advance our science and knowledge of crab population dynamics are underway,“ he said.

A relief program for fisherman who stand to lose their livelihoods for at least the next year is in the works, Prout said. Prout said it was in the hands of a higher power when asked what he and his fellow fishermen could do.
