Nikki Haley’s Husband to Deploy to Africa for Yearlong Mission

Get ready to salute Michael Haley, husband of former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, as he prepares for his second active-duty deployment with the South Carolina Army National Guard. This time, he’ll be heading to Africa for a yearlong mission that will coincide with most of his wife’s campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

“We could not be prouder of Michael and his military brothers and sisters,” Nikki Haley said in a statement to The Associated Press.

A formal deployment ceremony is expected to take place in the coming weeks, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity. The South Carolina National Guard called officers with Michael Haley’s skill set to deploy in support of U.S. Africa Command this spring.

A Military Family

Michael Haley has been a constant presence at his wife’s campaign events since she first ran for the White House. He made his first overseas deployment in 2013, when their children were 10 and 14 years old.

“He left me as a single mom governor, but we’re still married,” Nikki Haley said of her husband during a campaign appearance in Greer, South Carolina.

Returning from his 2013 deployment just before Christmas of that year, Michael Haley told The Associated Press that his unit worked as part of an agricultural support team, helping Afghan farmers turn from growing opium to growing other crops profitable enough to sustain their communities.

A Campaign of Sacrifice

While Nikki Haley has been highly critical of President Joe Biden’s competency as commander in chief, she has also pledged to make cuts in foreign aid to countries she says “hate America.” But as a military wife, she knows the sacrifices that come with serving one’s country.

“Our family is ready to make personal sacrifices when our loved one answers the call,” she said in a statement to The Associated Press.
