NFL-Panthers founder, former owner Richardson dies at 86

(Reuters) – Jerry Richardson, founder and former owner of the Carolina Panthers, died Wednesday at the age of 86 according to the National Football League.

Richardson, a short-lived player, won the 1959 NFL Championship Game alongside Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas. Following the 1995 debut of the Panthers, he was one of most influential owners in the league.

Richardson was accused in the workplace of misconduct and he sold his team, along with his team, to David Tepper. Tepper is a billionaire hedge fund investor, ex-senior owner, Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tepper and Nicole Tepper released statements stating that Jerry Richardson has made significant contributions to the Carolinas pro football scene “historic”.

He transformed the sport scene in the area and gave the NFL fans a place to call home. He was so generous with me when I purchased the team. I am grateful.”

Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, praised Richardson for his “League-first mentality”, pointing out Richardson’s leadership on the Stadium Committee Executive Committee and Management Council Executive Committee.

Goodell stated, “Jerry, a former player was deeply concerned about welfare players.” “He was a wise and caring advisor to me, his fellow owners, as well as many Panthers coaches, players, and other staff throughout the years.”
