Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) insisted in an address to Californians on Tuesday night that “democracy is under assault” by President Donald Trump after he deployed the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles without the governor’s approval.

“When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation,” Newsom said after days of anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests in Los Angeles. “California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next.”

Newsom previously accused Trump of breaking the law when he deployed the National Guard and, later on, the Marines to quell the riots. On Monday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.

“This brazen abuse of power by a sitting president inflamed a combustible situation, putting our people, our officers, and even our National Guard at risk,” Newsom said on Tuesday.

However, Trump, who has been critical of Newsom’s and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s responses to the riots, said it was necessary to deploy the National Guard to maintain law and order in the city.

However, Newsom accused Trump on CNN of not truly caring about maintaining the peace, referring to his response to the Jan. 6 Capitol riots as proof of his hypocrisy.

“Trump and his loyalists, they thrive on division because it allows them to take more power and exert even more control,” Newsom said. “And by the way, Trump, he’s not opposed to lawlessness and violence as long as it serves him. What more evidence do we need than Jan. 6?”

Newsom’s address came just hours after a federal judge declined to grant his request to block the military’s deployment to the city.
