Newsom asks for federal aid as storms continue to ‘pummel’ California

HThe threat of heavy rain from atmospheric storms remains. California Flooding could increase in a state already ravaged by snow, this winter. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), is reaching out towards the Biden administration Get assistance.

“I request that you issue an Emergency Declaration for the State of California due to the continuous, ongoing series of winter storms, which are now forecasted to include an impending atmospheric river system,” Newsom wrote in a letter President Joe Biden said that storms were expected to continue into mid-March. “The sustained force and longevity of persistent heavy rains, high winds, freeze warnings and record snowfall have already strained local and State resources.”

Thursday saw the arrival of the first in a series atmospheric river storms. As citizens and emergency personnel work to recover from the storms, forecasters warn of major flooding if heavy rain is combined with melting snowcaps on California’s mountain ranges.

California’s mountains are home to many residents. Like in San Bernardino County. This winter has already been very difficult for those affected by the storms, which caused power outages and isolated roads.

Newsom declared a State of Emergency for 13 County on March 1. Then, a week later, he added 21 additional counties to the declaration. “I expect to add additional counties as the snow continues to melt or be removed and further damage is revealed and/or needs arise,” The governor wrote to Biden that he was experiencing mild symptoms since testing positive for COVID-19.
